Susan Rankin Obituary

Susan Luckenbach Rankin
Radford, VA - Born on January 27, 1938 in Winston-Salem, NC, Susan Fulton Luckenbach was the younger child of Daniel Julius Luckenbach and Luna Juanita (Fulton) Luckenbach. Baptized as an infant, she was confirmed by profession of faith in the Lord Jesus Christ into the adult membership of Home Moravian Church of Winston-Salem in 1950. Studying at Ardmore Elementary and Reynolds High School, she graduated from Greensboro College with a degree in Elementary Education before marrying William Nevyn Rankin III in Home Moravian Church on June 18, 1960 and taking his name.
The young couple made their Christian home in Aiken, SC, where they first joined Grace Presbyterian Church and later First Presbyterian Church. They had their only child, William Duncan Rankin, baptized at Home Moravian Church in November 1961.
Diagnosed with Retinitis Pigmentosa at age 10 due to night blindness, Susan Rankin experienced a full life both in the light and in the dark. The progressive blindness that engulfed her was handled with grace: Susan always trusted God and His providence, resting on the fact that her special burden was for some greater purpose which the Lord knew.
As her husband declined with Multiple Sclerosis soon after their marriage, Susan cared for him with determined hope. After he suffered life-threatening burns followed by a surprising recovery, he had the privilege of returning the favor of caregiving, as she progressively lost her sight. She both gave and received care with a Christ-like spirit.
After her husband was diagnosed with cancer, Susan was cared for by her son and daughter-in-law for over 7 years in their home in Katy, Texas and then Radford, Virginia. "I am now your child," Susan declared, insisting on giving a Father's Day card each year to her son. "You are my special angel," she praised her devoted daughter-in-law. In recent months, she required full-time nursing care in Pulaski Health & Rehabilitation Center in Pulaski, Virginia.
Susan Rankin was a homemaker who cared for her family with great skill, enjoyed yard work, and served in First Church Aiken with heartfelt zeal. She taught children's Sunday School, led children's music, supported the Women in the Church (especially its Circle work), attended the Law Sunday School Class, and devoted herself to Visitation Committee calls. Her visits to area nursing homes and hospitals were a unique ministry, in which her disability prompted humble thankfulness to the Lord on the part of sighted residents and patients.
On Friday October 15, 2021, after battling congestive heart failure, strokes, dementia, and other ailments of this life, Susan Rankin went to be with the Lord, aged 83 years. "For I am convinced that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor things present, nor things to come, nor powers, nor height, nor depth, nor any other created thing, shall be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord" (Romans 8:38-39).
Susan Luckenbach Rankin was predeceased by her father, Daniel Julius Luckenbach, her mother, Luna Fulton Luckenbach, and her husband, William Nevyn Rankin III.
Susan Luckenbach Rankin is survived by her son William Duncan Rankin (and his wife Shirley Riley Rankin) of Radford, VA; grandsons Thomas Reid Rankin II of Radford, VA and Arthur John Rankin III (and his wife Anna Pendergrass Rankin) of Charlotte, NC; and granddaughter Susan Mae Rankin Pope (and her husband Hogan Andrew Pope) of Christiansburg, VA; and her brother Roy Leon Luckenbach of Asheboro, NC.
Graveside Service and Burial will be held Saturday October 23, 2021 at 4pm in God's Acre at Clemmons Moravian Church, 3560 Spangenberg Ave, Clemmons, NC.
In lieu of flowers, donations are encouraged to her Harvestwood Covenant Presbyterian Church, 2391 Franklin Pike SE, Floyd, VA 24091.

Dear Duncan, I want to let you know that I am thinking of you and your parents this holiday season. It can be difficult although it is interlaced with so many wonderful memories. I know how that goes-so many do. Please never think those of us who were privileged to call your folks friends, to go to church with them, share the neighborhood with them and share food-and woodworking!- with them would be the same without their influence. I remember the day Mom & Dad left for
The Presbyterian Home and your Mom was one of a contingent of good ladies, stopping by-just missing them-being driven by Betty Copley! I was there cleaning up loose ends. I'm sure I mentioned this before! And the different piece I selected that your Dad beautifully made will stay in our family as long as I can make that happen. Very glad his name is on the back! It was a joyful world to watch and know abut you three being it-and I do remember when your Grandad was there, too. You are not forgotten. I hope you and your family and friends have a very Happy Christmas and as we count the Advent Calendar and have fun rearranging the manger-let us all be so grateful we knew-and remember- each other. With our very best wishes, Frances and Bob Spencer's 2 excellent daughters, Terri and Betsy

Duncan, I wrote you before after your amazing Dad had passed away, and also, I believe, when I knew your Mom had left Aiken. I hope you remember me-I surely remember you-and your remarkable parent's. I have some of your Father's woodwork which I treasure to this very day. Some were presents that I bought for my parents, Bob and Frances Spencer, and Daddy emptied his pockets every single day in the wooden plate and Mother kept the gorgeous tall 3 legged (for her) fern stand in our living room, for years! I am grateful to have them now and will pass them on to my son and so forth and so on! Yes, you know they are THAT well-made. And then, miracle of miracles, as your Mom's site finally dissipated, your Dad had "the miracle burn" and the roles changed-God's plans, not ours! I feel very privileged to have known them, even minus the miracle. I loved their outlook on life and how they loved family. The very day my parent's left Aiken to move to the Presbyterian Home, which they loved, your Mom pulled up into the driveway with other good friends and Betty Copley driving. Jim and I were still there finishing clearing out the little shed in the back. I heard them pull up and had a chance to speak with every good woman in that car! I hated telling them they only barely missed them-but I know they found a way to be in touch with Aiken friends, through out their stay at the Pres. Home. I am believing that you have a fine and friendly, loving wife and wish you both all the good things that can come your way! So, Duncan, I will just say, at this time of the year, God bless us all, everyone! Please hug yourself and your wife-as I know your parent's hugged you and each other throughout their incredible marriage. Aren't we lucky-or as my Dad would say, "fortunate" to have grown up in THAT neighborhood, gone to THAT church and been friends for so very many years? I believe we were! Warmly, Terri-Spencer-Williams

Duncan and Family, I am so sorry for your loss. My Mama and Daddy (Bob and Frances) thought so much of your sweet Mom, as did I. Please know you are all in our thoughts and prayers. Allison Vause and the Spencer famiy.
