Spencer Smith Obituary

Spencer Claude Smith
Wagener - Spencer Claude Smith, 100, of Wagener entered into eternal peace on Friday, September 30, 2022.
Mr. Smith is the husband of the late Lelline Crout Smith whom he married on August 12, 1945 after returning from World War II. Spencer is the loving father of Donna Campbell and her husband Robert of West Union, SC and Claudia Beaty and her husband David of Douglasville, GA. He is the grandfather of Erin Leftwich and husband Wayne, Kevin Beaty and wife Casey, and Sally Wallace and husband Mike. He is the great-grandfather of Max Wallace, Alice Leftwich, and Clara Leftwich. Spencer was born in the Madison community of Oconee County to the late Wilburn H. Smith and the late Essie Jane Spencer Smith on January 11, 1922.
In addition to his immediate family, Spencer was blessed with many people in his life who loved and cared for him. Along with many of his former students and members of the Wagener Community, he had a special place in his heart for Elizabeth "Cricket" (Tony) Ruvo, Allen (Kathy) Williams, and Doug (Jackie) Busbee, whom he loved as his extended family.
Spencer is a Purple Heart Veteran of the United States Army, having served in World War II with the 5th Armored Division in western Europe. After returning from war, he completed his education at Clemson University in 1947, receiving a B.S. in Vocational Agricultural Education. He began his teaching career at Wagener High School in 1947 where he taught Vocational Agriculture until his retirement in 1982. After retiring, he served as a member of the Aiken County Soil and Water Conservation Commission for 18 years. He was a member of Wagener First Baptist Church where he served as a Deacon and a Sunday School Teacher.
The Smith family would like to express their appreciation to Becky Sharpe for her love and care and to all others who showed their love for him in ways both large and small. He often spoke of how blessed he was to have spent his life in the Wagener community.
Visitation will be 12:00 - 1:45 pm on Wednesday, October 5, 2022 at Wagener First Baptist Church. Funeral Service will be 2 pm also in the church sanctuary. Burial will follow at Wagener Cemetery with Military Honors.

I never had the honor and privilege to meet this distinguished American Patriot and Clemson Alumnus. American's greatest generation is quickly coming to a close as the years pass us by as we become cognizant Spencer Claude Smith truly understood "Duty-Honor-Country" as he and millions of American Citizens answered the call of duty. Now he rightfully rests in honored Glory as God's newest angel. May God's loving hand guide each family member as they long remember the sterling and everlasting legacy of a man who truly epitomized "A Clemson Man Needs No Introduction!" Earl Hansford Grubbs, former Barnwell resident, CU 67 and Retired Army Officer
