Sophie Gregory Obituary
AIKEN - Mrs. Sophie Christopher Gregory, 103, entered into eternal rest Saturday, August 26, 2017 at Lexington Medical Center.
Born May 9, 1914, in Savannah, GA, her family moved shortly thereafter to Mytilene, Greece. Returning to Savannah in 1920, she graduated from Chatham County public schools. In 1936, she married Euthymios Athan Gregory and they settled in Aiken. In 1984, Mrs. Gregory retired from J.B. White Department Store as a sales person after 28 years of employment. Committed to her faith, she was an active member of the Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church, Augusta, GA and the church's Lady's Philoptochos Society.
Mrs. Gregory was predeceased by her parents, George and Despina Christopher; husband, E.A. Gregory and a son, Arthur Gregory.
She is survived by her daughter, Maria (David) Taylor; two sons, George (Nancy) Gregory, John (Betty) Gregory and numerous beloved grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Sophie, as she was called by her family and many friends, was the matriarch of her family. She spoke clearly and directly on all matter concerning her family and no one was ever in doubt as to her position or beliefs. A strong advocate of education, Sophie took great pride in the academic accomplishments of her children and grandchildren. She had a passion for gardening and was a devoted fan of Gamecock and Duke Blue Devils sports. She will be dearly missed.
A Trisagion service will be held on Sunday, August 27th at Shellhouse Funeral Home at 6 PM with the family receiving friends until 8:00 PM.
The funeral will be held Monday, August 28th at 11:00 AM at Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church, 953 Telfair St., Augusta, GA with The Reverend Father Vasile Bitere officiating. Interment will follow in Aiken Memorial Gardens.
Pallbearers will be Paul Gregory, Dr. Jonathan Taylor, Greg Taylor, Alex Taylor, John Gregory, Joe Clarke and Nick Jeancake.
Memorials may be directed to the Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church, 953 Telfair St., Augusta, GA, 30901.

I met Sophie at the funeral of her son, Art, who was a Duke teammate and close friend. She was an amazing fine lady, who cherished her family. I had heard stories about her from her sons and daughter. I regret not sharing more time with her. She will be missed but also welcomed by those who proceed her. Prayers and fond memories to her extended family.
