Dr. Sandra Field
AIKEN - Dr. Sandra T. Field, age 69, wife of Jim Field, passed away August 7, 2025.
Dr. Field was born May 19, 1956 to the late Henry and Lois Truitt. She received her Bachelor's of Music from Furman University in 1978, her Master of Music from Northwestern University in 1980, and her doctorate in Education from Columbia University Teachers College in 1997. Before entering Teachers College, Dr. Field pursued a professional singing career in Chicago. As a Voice Performance major at Northwestern University, she sang with the Chicago Symphony Chorus and performed professionally for various churches, synagogues, choral organizations, and opera companies.
Upon moving to the Northeast, Dr. Field taught at Randolph High School and Villa Walsh Academy. In the fall of 1999, Dr. Field joined the faculty of the University of South Carolina Aiken as an assistant professor in the Visual and Performing Arts Department where she spearheaded the department's efforts to develop a Music Education degree, which was implemented in 2004.Upon retiring, Dr. Field co-founded Joye in Aiken, formerly known as Juilliard in Aiken, with Greg Smith and Steve Naifeh. Aiken is the only community in the world which Juilliard has partnered to create a performing arts festival. In the past 17 years, Joye in Aiken has delighted thousands of our school children and adults with outstanding artistic performances. Importantly, the Juilliard artists have supplemented their performances with motivational outreach programs that include master classes, workshops, artist residences, and in-school performances, reaching over 50,000 K-12 grade school children.
Survivors include her husband, Jim Field her niece, Sandra "Missy" Wall her sister, Jann Truitt Lane step-daughters, Deborah Field and Elizabeth Bernich (Steve) step-son, Chris Field (Stacey) step-grandchildren, Kevin Field (Mara), Katie Field, Kelly Bernich, and Benjamin Bernich.
The funeral service will be held at 1:00 p.m., Saturday, September 13, 2025 at St. Thaddeus Episcopal Church, 125 Pendleton St., SW, Aiken, SC 29801.
The family will receive friends following the service at The Green Boundary Club, 780 Whiskey Road, Aiken, SC 29801.In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions should be directed to Joye in Aiken, PO Box 5538, Aiken, SC 29804 (
