Richard Philipp Obituary

Richard Philipp
AIKEN - Mr. Richard Frank Philipp, 91, passed away Sunday, September 2, 2018.
Mr. Philipp was born in Oneida, NY, a son of the late Frank H. and Mabel Naumann Philipp. He served in the US Navy during World War II aboard the USS Appalachian. After completing his education in chemistry at Union College in Schenectady, NY, he moved to Aiken in 1952 with his wife, the late Arline L. Philipp and worked as a metallurgist for E.I. He was active in the Aiken community and some of his involvement included membership at St. Thaddeus Episcopal Church where he faithfully ushered at the 8am service for numerous years, the Metallurgical Society of America, the Augusta Stamp Club and the American Philatelic Society and was a founding member and chairman of the Aiken Decency League.
Richard, known as Dick to his friends, was one of the most loyal, kind, generous, bright and loving people to has touched this earth. He had an amazing sense of humor which he never lost. Everyone who was lucky enough to know him was a dear friend to him and he considered them family. Family was most important to him as he had so little...he held them close to his heart and cherished them until his death. They are most grateful for his love and all he instilled in them. His family will miss him terribly but is comforted that he passed with grace and dignity...just as he lived his life.
He is survived by two daughters, Patricia P. Edel, Aiken, Mary Katherine Philipp, MD, Aiken; a son, Richard A. (Gabrielle) Philipp; six grandchildren, Richard A. Philipp, II, Patrick C. Philipp, Christopher P. Edel, Crawford Philipp Anderson, Loughlin Philipp Anderson, Hallie Philipp Anderson; a great grandson, Richard A. Philipp., III.
The funeral service will be held at 1:00 PM Thursday, September 6, 2018 from the graveside in the St. Thaddeus Episcopal Church Cemetery with the Reverend Joseph Whitehurst officiating.
Pallbearers will be Richard's grandchildren. Honorary pallbearers will be his caretakers: Catherine Kennel, Tawneisha Miller, She'brea Quarles, Tyeshia Johnson, Georgia Grabon, and Beatrice Washington.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Hitchcock Woods Foundation, P.O. Box 1703, Aiken, SC 29802, or the Saratoga Warhorse Foundation Memorial Fund, P.O. Box 461, Saratoga Springs, NY 17866.

I want to offer my most sincere condolences to Andy and his sisters and their families. All of we Harmons loved Mr. Philipp. He was friendly, kind and quite possibly the funniest, most quick-witted person I ever had the pleasure of meeting. It was an honor to have known him. God bless his family.
