Rebecca Anne Veldman
Aiken, SC - Rebecca Anne Veldman, loving wife, cherished mother, doting grandmother, and devoted educator, passed away peacefully on March 27, 2026, at Barclay House of Aiken. Born on June 14, 1945, in Houston, Texas, Becky held great pride in her Texas roots, which shaped her spirited and generous nature throughout her life.
Becky's lifelong dedication to teaching began after graduating from Bishop Byrne High School, Port Arthur, Texas, in 1963. She pursued further studies at Our Lady of the Lake College in San Antonio and earned her degree in Education from Lamar University in Beaumont, Texas. She also held certification in Special Education and completed graduate-level coursework in Education at the University of South Carolina, deepening her expertise and passion for nurturing young minds.
Her teaching career began in Beaumont, Texas, where she initially focused on Special Education. However, it was at St. Mary Help of Christians Catholic School in Aiken where she spent the majority of her career, leaving an indelible mark as a beloved fourth-grade teacher. Becky was widely remembered by her students as a favorite educator who had the rare gift of recognizing individual abilities and unique learning styles. Her innovative and adaptable teaching made learning both meaningful and enjoyable, ensuring her students carried fond memories and valuable lessons long after leaving St. Mary's.
After retiring, Becky's generosity continued through her volunteer work with ACTS of Aiken, where she dedicated many years to giving back and supporting others. This service embodied her enduring compassion and deep commitment to her community.
Outside of her professional and volunteer endeavors, Becky found deep fulfillment and peace as a master gardener. Her garden was a sanctuary of vibrant flowers and tranquil beauty, nurtured with countless hours of dedication and love. This passion brought her immense happiness and reflected her creative and joyful personality, qualities warmly remembered by those who knew her.
Rebecca is survived by her devoted husband, John, to whom she was married for 52 years; her children, Stephen and Amanda; and her treasured grandchildren, Niamh, Declan, and Ronan Doyle. She was the beloved daughter of the late Clifford Werner and Betty Landry.
Friends and family will remember Becky as a joyful, creative, and generous spirit whose life touched many through her commitment to education, community, and the beauty of nature. Her legacy endures in the hearts of those she taught, loved, and served.
