Ralph Buchanan Obituary

North Augusta, SC – Dr. Ralph William Buchanan, Sr., 79, entered into rest at his home on August 10, 2025, surrounded by his family. The Rosary will be recited Friday evening, August 15th, at 5 o'clock at Posey Funeral Home, with visitation following until 7 o'clock. The Mass of Christian Burial will be conducted Saturday morning, August 16th, at 11 o'clock at Our Lady of Peace Catholic Church, celebrated by Rev. J. Antony Gaspar. Interment will follow in Our Lady of Peace Catholic Church Columbarium on the church grounds. Following the interment, Dr. Buchanan's family invites guests to join them for a reception at the Camellia Room at Lookaway Inn. Dr. Buchanan was born March 31, 1946, in Jersey City, NJ, to the late Ralph Waldo Buchanan and Jennie Blackadder Buchanan. He was raised in West Palm Beach, FL, where he graduated from Cardinal Newman High School. Dr. Buchanan would go on to graduate from Spring Hill College in Mobile, AL. While in college, he met and married his sweetheart, Geine, and happily starting their life together. Upon graduation, Dr. Buchanan worked in Atlanta at the Center for Disease Control for a number of years before returning to school to pursue his doctorate degree at the Medical College of Georgia. He served his medical residency in Pensacola, FL, after which he returned to the area, making North Augusta his home, while working as a physician in the emergency room at Doctors Hospital. However, practicing Family Medicine was his passion, Dr. Buchanan started his own practice and retired with over 30 years of service to his community. Dr. Buchanan was a faithful parishioner of Our Lady of Peace Catholic Church, a devout Catholic man, and a member of The Knights of Columbus. He loved all of God's creation, especially children. As a staunch pro-life advocate, he supported the sanctity of life, both born and unborn. Dr. Buchanan was a man of many talents. He will be fondly remembered as a jokester with an incredible sense of humor and as a history buff with a wealth of knowledge about the world and how it worked. To every question posed to him, he had an eloquent and detailed answer. He enjoyed photography, the game of golf, traveling, boating and spending time on the water. Dr. Buchanan was a lifelong fan of baseball, rooting for Mickey Mantle and the Yankees in his youth, later becoming an avid Braves fan. However, his greatest joy in life was his family. He loved his wife, adored his children, and cherished his grandchildren. Supporting his grandchildren in their sports, their activities, and celebrating their accomplishments was his absolute favorite. In addition to his parents, Dr. Buchanan was preceded in death by his son, Dr. Ralph W. Buchanan, Jr., and his sister, Lee Buchanan. Surviving family members left to cherish his memory include his wife of 59 years, Geine Buchanan; his daughters, Michele Metts (Jimmy) and Laurie Jimenez (Tony); his grandchildren, Christopher McDowell, William McDowell (Megan), Erin McDowell, Bridget Buchanan, Maggie Jimenez, Daniel Ralph Jimenez, and Caroline Jimenez; his great-grandchildren, Scottie McDowell and Charlie McDowell. Honorary Pallbearers are beloved classmates from Cardinal Newman High School, Class of 1963.
