Mrs. Penny Ophelia Dicks Smith was born to the late Samuel and Farry Bell Dicks on June 21 1923, in Aiken County, South Carolina. She was a member of Zion Hill Missionary Baptist Church, where she sang on the Zion Hill Senior Choir until her health failed her. Mrs. Smith once taught Sunday School at Friendship Baptist Church of Silver Bluff Road. Penny was educated in the Aiken County school system, attending both Pleasant Hill and Storm Branch Academy.
On November 18, 1939, Penny married Charlie Smith, and reared, nine children. After rearing her children, she gained employment at Graniteville Company where she retired after many years. She was also an active member of the Storm Branch Alumni Association. Above all things, she was a devoted wife, mother, and grandmother who never passed up an opportunity to fellowship with her family and friends.
Penny was bold, vibrant and full of life. As an avid gardener who loved flowers and being outdoors, she didn't mind getting her hands dirty. She also had a majestic eye for the finer things in life. She loved fashion and clothes, especially anything that came in her favorite colors, purple or blue. As a woman of faith, she enjoyed attending church and listening to gospel music; her favorite singer was Lee Williams. Even as her health declined, her quick wit and unusual strength kept her family and friends on their toes and laughing.
She leaves to cherish her memories: her surviving children, including three daughters, Mary Annette Vaughn, Shirley "Shell" D. Brown, and Christmas Ena (Jimmy) Starlings, all of Aiken, South Carolina; two sons, Kenneth A. (Dorothy) Smith, of Albuquerque, New Mexico, and Mcronel W. (Barbara) Smith of Aiken, South Carolina. Additionally, she leaves a legacy of twenty-six grandchildren, forty-three great grandchildren, and thirty-three great, great grandchildren. She also leaves behind three devoted sisters?Josephine Smiley, Nazerine Morgan and Leola Dicks, all of Aiken, South Carolina, and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and other Relatives and friends.
A. A. Dicks Funeral Home is in charge of these arrangements.
