Peggy Seigler Obituary

Peggy Ann Cantrell Seigler
COLUMBIA, SC - Peggy Ann Cantrell Seigler, 83, passed away Thursday, July 24, 2014, at home. Born in Chesnee, South Carolina on February 12, 1931, she was the daughter of the late Hazie Eben Cantrell and Fay Corne Cantrell. She graduated from Chesnee High School and earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Physical Education from Furman University.
Upon graduation, she taught at Aiken High School, where she was the Head Girls' Basketball Coach, leading them to numerous state championships. It was also in Aiken that she met the charming Gary Seigler - when he came to pick up Peggy's housemate for a date! He was, as everyone who came to know her, immediately smitten - and won her hand after five years of ardent courtship. She became the bride of Mr. Andrew Gary Seigler on June 28, 1958, and they celebrated their Golden Anniversary before his death in 2009.
The couple moved to Charlotte, where they welcomed their daughter, Allison Kathleen, in 1964. They resided there until 1973, when they moved to the Heathwood neighborhood in Columbia. They became active members of Eastminster Presbyterian Church and Peggy joined the Dogwood Garden Club. Two of her passions were her gardening and decorating.
Always busy, Peggy decided to go back to work when her friends were slowing down and retiring. Columbians will remember the cute sprite from her 12 years at the Creative Kids Toy Shop in Five Points.
With the arrival of her granddaughter, Katie in 2005, Peggy's life shifted into top gear. The love that she and Gary had bestowed on Allison was increased tenfold. She accompanied Allison, her husband Louie Harrison, and Katie on trips to Italy and France as often as possible and could be found with Katie at every opportunity.
There are dozens of adjectives to describe this Southern lady, who gave of herself to everyone she encountered: cheerful, loving, darling, kind, generous, laughing, caring are only a few.
She is survived by her brother, Steven Wilbur Cantrell and his wife, Jo Ann Daniel, of Mooresville, S.C.; their children, Steven William Cantrell and Elizabeth Cantrell Hassard. Her daughter, Allison Seigler Harrison, and her husband, Louie Little Harrison, III and their daughter, Kathleen Grace Harrison, of Columbia, also survive her. Her sister, Kathleen Cantrell Steele of Columbia predeceased her in 2012.
The family expresses their gratitude to the lovely nurses at South Carolina Oncology Associates.
A memorial service will be held at 3:00 p.m. Sunday, July 27, 2014, at Eastminster Presbyterian Church, Thompson Hall, 3200 Trenholm Road.
The family will receive friends afterwards in the parlor of the Christian Living Center.
Dunbar Funeral Home, Devine Street Chapel, is assisting the family.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Eastminster Presbyterian Church Memorial Garden Fund, 3200 Trenholm Road, Columbia SC, 29204.

Mrs. Seigler was a doll. She kept us girls in line in PE at Aiken High and I
loved her. She and I just clicked. My
memories are wonderful in PE because of her. May God comfort you and hold you close. You are in my prayers.

I recall Miss Cantrell as a very energetic P.E. teacher while I was a student at Aiken High. Imagine my surprise when I saw Gary standing outside the gym,as he played football with my brother in law, William Clark. What a pleasure to know they were dating and later married. You touched many lives, may you rest in peace. Brenda Gantt ElDada.....Lexington, S.C.

Miss Cantrell was a favorite teacher of mine. She convinced me to play basketball for the girls' team at Aiken and I loved it. I moved to Aiken from the West coast and we never had girls' sports in high school there. She was a fun and encouraging teacher. I remember her fondly and express my regrets to her family.

I remember "Miss Cantrell" well. She was my gym teacher, and I was one of the volunteers that "assisted" her in gym one year to gain extra credit. She was really nice to all of us, and everyone loved her. Betty Rollins Busch (Class of '57 - Aiken High School)

Allison: I remember your mother was very kind and always smiling. I know how much she treasured you, her only daughter. My mother remembered that she really liked your mother and enjoyed speaking with her when they drove on field trips or did other Hammond mom things. I know you will miss her but I know you are comforted to know that she is pain free and in a better place and you will see her again some day.

I "warmed the bench" for three years, but I enjoyed every minute of the time I spent with Mrs. Seigler! She was a true leader and coach for all of us.

"Miss Cantrell" was my/our girls PE teacher at Aiken High back in our day and wow did we all flock to her. She was so young, not like we thought teachers had to be. We loved her so much. She was extraordinary every day and none of us will ever forget her. Bask in your memories, family, as we will too. Dottie Barton Boatwright

What a joy it must have been to have Peggy Seigler as a friend through the years. I am blessed to have known her the last year as she so courageously fought cancer. May God's peace and love surround her family during these days of missing her presence, and may they be uplifted knowing she is with her beloved husband and they will all be together again some day.

What a beautiful memorial and it so reflected the amazing woman she was. While I know there are many things Peggy will be remembered for, I know it was her love of people that set her apart.
From the moment I met Peggy, she brought a smile to my face. Enchanting is a word that embodied her. Her fiesty spirit and true love of life reflected in all she did. People were drawn to her and she never met a stranger. I know the nurses all loved and adored her, but she touched the lives of so many other patients while she was with us. Coming in as " Tammy Faye Baker" on Halloween brought the house down. She simply loved life and the people in it.

How blessed I feel to have had the opportunity to care for her and to come to know her family as well. Her legacy lives on in Allison and Katie too, as they both embrace and love life and people as well. Peggy you will be greatly missed , but never forgotten.

With much love and admiration
Dusty
