Ovila Gleaton Obituary

Mrs. Ovila K. Gleaton, a beloved mother, grandmother, sister, and friend, passed away on Sunday, October 5th, 2025, at the age of 85. The family will greet friends from 2 until 3 o'clock on Friday, October 10, 2025 at Hatcher Funeral Home, 3464 Jefferson Davis Hwy, Graniteville, SC 29829. A Celebration of Life service will begin at 3 o'clock in the chapel of the funeral home. Minister Dorothy Chrisco will officiate. Entombment will follow in Sunset Memorial Gardens Mausoleum. Pallbearers include Jeff Sharpton, David Kirkland, Tony Smith, Alan Kirkland, Brian Fowler, and Rennison Robbins. Known for her independent spirit and hard-working nature, Ovila left a legacy of kindness and strength that will be remembered by all who knew her. Ovila worked in the lab at Owens Corning Fiberglass, where she retired after 30 years of service. She had a love for travel and a particular fondness for Hunting Island, where she worked at the Lighthouse and served as a Campground Host at Hunting Island State Park. Her love for the outdoors was evident in her beautiful gardens, where she spent countless hours nurturing her flowers. She was affectionately known as "Maw Maw" to her grandchildren. She hosted countless family gatherings at home, especially during the holidays, where her beloved Christmas Ham was a favorite. Ovila is survived by her children, Crystal Chrisco (Doug), Jean Hicks (Dennis), Michael Treadaway (Dani), and Bill Treadaway. She also leaves behind her siblings, Loree Rutland and Victor Kirkland (Mary Jane), as well as 8 grandchildren and 20 great-grandchildren, all of whom will miss her dearly. She was preceded in death by her parents, Evelyn and Mose Kirkland, her spouses, James Robinson and Tommy Gleaton, and her siblings, Martha McCarty and Catherine Smith. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in memory of Ovila may be made to the Friends of Hunting Island Foundation by visiting https://www.friendsofhuntingisland.org/memorials. The family would also like to say a special thank you to Mary Jane, Shauna, Nigel and the staff at Silver Bluff Grove for the love and care given to Mrs. Ovila.
