Nadine Ohara Obituary

Nadine Atsuko Ohara Resident of Walnut Creek Nadine, well-known photographer and a 27 year resident of Walnut Creek, died February 15 after a brief illness. Born in Hawaii February 21, 1954, Nadine attended Kalanianaole School and Hilo High School. Her love of photography began in High School when she apprenticed with a Hilo photographer. She came to San Francisco in 1972 to study photography. She attended Lone Mountain College in 1973 and 1974. In January 1975 she enrolled at Brooks Institute in Santa Barbara. In late 1975 she returned to San Francisco where she began a 10 year career in Personnel and Marketing Communications at Decimus Corporation, eventually becoming Creative Director, and did occasional freelance photography jobs. In 1985 she left Decimus to start a computer graphics business in Walnut Creek. Nadine continued to work as a freelance photographer, including for Lynds Photography, and in 1999 the computer graphics business was closed, and Nadine opened her photography business, Picturesque. She was loved by her clients, highly respected and admired by her colleagues, and cherished by her family and friends. In turn, she loved her family, photography, her friends and her dog. She was not all work and no play, by any means. She enjoyed parties, trips to wine country, great food and great wine, the Opera, Symphony, Ballet, Theatre, Movies and books. She will be remembered by all who knew her for her quiet manner, humility, integrity, strength and wit, her insistence on the highest standards in her work, her generosity with her time and her talent, and her willingness to share her knowledge and experience with anyone who asked. She was a great treasure, and she is greatly missed. Nadine was preceded in death by her mother, Yukiko Ohara. Nadine is survived by her father, Rev. Kenjyo Ohara of Hawaii; her brother and sister-in-law Harlan and Rose Mary Ohara and her nephew Nikolas Ohara of San Jose, California; her sister Jasmine and brother-in-law Daniel Morrison, niece Erin and her husband Joe Boll, niece Leigh Morrison and her husband Fritz Johnson, and their daughters Via and Anya Johnson, all of Hawaii, Nephew David and his wife Ashlee Vega, nephew Christopher Vega and his daughter Gabriela Vega, and nieces Samantha Genho and Ashley Genho, all of San Jose, California. Only today, nearly a year after, have I learned of Nadine's passing. My husband and I are deeply saddened. Both from MA, we decided to be married in July 2010 in the Napa Valley area. Because my husband Christopher is also a wedding photographer, we posted on the web board that Nadine moderated, that we were looking for a wedding photographer in CA. Naturally, Nadine (being the generous soul she was) volunteered to be our personal photographer so she "could try out a few experiments in an unhurried setting". But truly, we were the ones benefiting from her gesture and not the other way around. We treasure our wedding photos and will always remember her with the deepest of fondness and respect. This world has lost a great woman.

I went to Hilo High School with Nadine, we were in the same homeroom and art classes with Mr. De la Cruz. Nadine was very gifted and talented, she showed her creativity at an early age. Nadine was also a very sweet, kind person. I'm sorry that I just found out her death so late. I'll always remember Nadine.

I never actually met Nadine in person, but we corresponded many times via email and on the photo.net forums. I hoped to eventually meet her during my numerous trips to the US, but alas! It was not to be. She was a gentle spirit and a wonderful educator. I will miss her dearly. To her family, I pray for strength and resilience. May her legacy live on...

I worked with Nadine at Decimus back in the 70's -- she was an amazing and talented young woman and I was honored to know her. I treasure the photos she took of me and my late husband. I am deeply saddened by her passing.
