Mary Scogin Obituary

Mary Ann "Marianne" Scogin
Augusta, GA - Mary Ann "Marianne" Scogin, 75, wife of John H. Scogin, IV, of Aiken, passed away, surrounded by her family, January 27, 2021 at Augusta University after a prolonged illness.
Born September 30, 1945 in Brooklyn, NY, she was the daughter of the late Agnes (nee Becker) and Norman Pugh.
Marianne grew up and went through secondary school in Hunting, NY. She worked for a time in New York City. After she married her first husband, they briefly raised their young children in Brightwaters, NY. She moved to LaPlace, LA, where she divorced and continued to raise her two sons on her own.
Marianne met her husband John when they both worked in New Orleans, LA - a city they later returned to visit often. Although she had lived in Aiken since 1990, her associations with New Orleans remained strong throughout her life; shaping her cooking, decorating, and sports affiliations. Her holiday celebrations always had a New Orleans flair. She was an avid reader and followed many authors. Marianne worked for many years as a technical recruiter, a job she enjoyed as she liked meeting and talking with people. Marianne loved travel and visited many national parks and cities, both foreign and domestic. She and her husband enjoyed fine dining and fine wine; their vacations were often planned around visiting wineries and eating good food. She loved animals and almost always owned several dogs and cats.
She was preceded in death by her ex-husband Laurence J. Woods, Jr, and her parents.
She will be lovingly remembered by her husband John of 30 years; her sons, Laurence Woods (Michelle) of Denver, CO and Chris Woods (Stephanie) of San Diego, CA; and many members of the extended Scogin family. She is missed by her two dogs and four cats.
The family will receive friends Wednesday, February 10, 2021 from 3-5 PM at The Historic George Funeral Home, 211 Park Ave, SW, Aiken, SC 29801.
A Celebration of Life will be held at 5 PM, Wednesday, February 10, 2021 in The George Funeral Chapel.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made in Marianne's memory to FOTAS of Aiken, 333 Wire Rd, Aiken, SC 29801 or to the Humane Society of McCormick County, 1351 Hammond St, McCormick, SC 29835.

Marianne, you were a wonderful neighbor and friend. And an inspiration as an animal lover. What a privilege and gift to know you!
