Margaret Sacks Obituary

Margaret "Maggie" Sacks
AIKEN - Margaret E. "Maggie" Sacks, age 65, died on Tuesday, January 24, 2023, in her home after a two-year battle with ovarian cancer. A native of Concordville, Pennsylvania, she has been a resident of Aiken since 1973.
Anyone who had the privilege of knowing Maggie knew her to be a sincere woman with a kind heart. Maggie was a skilled artesian and woodworker. She frequently used her many talents in acts of service to her family, church, and community.
Maggie was a devoted wife, mother, sister, daughter, and grandmother. She preferred an active life: spending time outdoors, teaching her grandchildren new skills, taking on new projects, hiking in Hitchcock Woods, or simply baking an apple pie. It was rare to find her stationary, even in what would be her final year.
Maggie could find the good in everything and in everyone, even in her illness. Maggie saw the world in a positive light and was awestruck by even the simplest of God's gifts.
Maggie was also a trailblazer. Inspired by her maternal grandfather, who was an accomplished carpenter, Maggie enrolled in shop class in her Pennsylvania high school. When she moved to South Carolina, she discovered that female students were not encouraged to enroll in shop classes. Undeterred, she enrolled in shop class as the first female student and demonstrated skills that amazed her fellow students and her instructors. Following college, she apprenticed under renowned furniture maker Jake Cress in Virginia until she returned to Aiken and opened her own shop, M.E. Sacks Fine Furniture & Design. She was a founding member of the Woodworker's Guild of South Carolina in 1979. She spent her early career being commissioned to build custom fine furniture, much of which can still be found in many Aiken churches, homes, and businesses.
Later in life, she and her husband, David, owned and operated Newberry Hall in downtown Aiken from 2001 until the business was sold to Patrick and Natalie Carlisle in 2015. Most recently, they have focused on managing their real estate holdings while enjoying a semi-retirement, spending more of their time in South Florida.
Maggie and David were long-time members of St. Thaddeus Episcopal Church until moving their membership to St. Augustine of Canterbury Episcopal Church in Aiken several years ago.
Maggie is survived by her husband, David L. Sacks; her daughters, Lindsay S. Tucker (Bennett) of Aiken, Catie S. Naranjo (Roger) of North Miami Beach, FL, and Margaret Emily Sacks of Waynesville, NC; her father, L. Dudley Erb, of Aiken; her brother, Samuel D. Erb (Donna), of Aiken; and her three grandchildren, Nathan L. Tucker, Laurel B. Tucker, and Roger C. Naranjo. She was predeceased by her mother, Deborah C. Erb.
On February 18th at 3pm, a graveside service for family and friends will be held at the St. Thaddeus Episcopal Church cemetery with Father Daniel Wagner officiating. Following the service, a Celebration of Life reception will be held at Newberry Hall, 117 Newberry Street, SW, from 4pm to 6pm.
Memorial donations may be made to St. Augustine of Canterbury Episcopal Church, 1630 Silverbluff Road, Aiken, SC 29803 or the Hitchcock Woods Foundation, P.O. Box 1702, Aiken, SC 29802.

I first met Maggie at the very first meeting of the newly formed Downtown Aiken Design Review Board.
From that moment on Maggie was not only a dear friend but an inseparable part of my soul forever etched in my memories.
Her presence will be truly missed until that day when we will be reunited in eternal fellowship .

Maggie was such a kind person. Always humble with a quick smile and a kind word. Her woodworking skills were amazing and she was always generous in sharing her knowledge. Aiken and all of us who knew her are better off for it. Condolences to her beloved David and family.

Barbara and just learned...and our hearts dropped for a moment, then with joy we looked in each other´s wet eyes to say out loud how wonderful it has been to know Maggie and share her time together in this world.
In a word, Maggie was an example of "Compassion", and that memory remains with us; she was an absolutely fabulous person. My heartfelt sadness for David, his partner we´ll not see by his side.

My condolences to David and the family. I´ve never met anyone like Maggie before , she was so kind and humble about her being so talented as a craftsman /woodworker. Several years ago, I was so fortunate to have the opportunity to build an addition on their home and she was so gracious to let me use her shop if I needed to cut down any wood for the interior trim work. Her shop was a pleasure to have access to whenever I needed it for the work I was doing there. One day I was cutting the Hitchcock ceiling trim pieces and got to one point where the angles were not common cuts and Maggie happened to walk in and saw I was having an issue with it and asked me if I needed a hand and of course I said absolutely yes. It took her a whole lot less time than I would have to figure that one out. I was amazed of her knowledge and willingness to jump right in and help me out. That job had to be my favorite that I remember for a long time because David and Maggie were such a pleasure to be around and work for.
I´m so sorry for her passing, but overjoyed, knowing that she is in our saviors, loving arms and rejoicing and out of pain.

I have known David and Maggie for years. I remember when she and David opened Newberry Hall. Her cookies became the talk of the town. What I remember most is her deer and beautiful smile! She will be dearly missed. prayers go out David and their family!

I love this photo and these two people so much. We were all in Asheville at the same time and caught up for some Mexican and drinks at The Grovepark Inn. Maggie was always so very kind to me, and included me in family events. I am glad I was able to crack open some oysters for you at Bennett´s party. We got to chat and laugh and catch up a bit. You are loved and missed. My life is better for having known you.
