Malcolm Sterling Obituary

Mr. Malcolm "Mike" Hill Sterling, 85, husband of the late Mrs. Betty Ruth Sterling, passed away peacefully on Sunday, September 14, 2025. The family will greet friends on Tuesday, September 16, 2025, from 6 to 8 PM at Hatcher Funeral Home and Cremation Service, 3464 Jefferson Davis Highway, Graniteville, SC 29829. A Celebration of Life Service will be at 2 PM on Wednesday, September 17, 2025, at the Langley Bible Church with Pastor Gene Brown officiating. Interment will follow in The Historic Graniteville Cemetery, Graniteville, SC. Pallbearers will be Kyle Saverance, Todd Saverance, Greg Cato, Brian Feagin, Ryan Gregory, and Chase Feagin. Mr. Sterling was preceded in death by his sisters, Shirley Ivey and Betty Jean Wilkins. Left to cherish his memory are his five children: John (Kristie) Drew II, Jolynn Saverance, Michael (Amber) Sterling, Lori Banks, and Lisa (Randy) Justice; ten grandchildren, Ryan Gregory, Lauren Durden (Brett), Haley Justice, Amber Turner (Dylan), Kyle Saverance, Brittany Sterling, Benjamin Drew, Breanna Drew, Laiken Sterling, and Jillian Sterling and three great-grandchildren, Malcolm Coady, Saylor Turner, and Skylar Turner. Mr. Sterling was born in Augusta, Georgia, to the late J.D. and Evelyn Hill Sterling, and was a graduate of Langley Bath and Clearwater High School. He was a retired superintendent for Ron Cross Construction with twenty-plus years of service. Following retirement, he ran Mike's Lawn Service for well over twenty years, cutting grass for many people other than his clients at no charge because they were in need. An extraordinarily talented and in-demand guitarist, Mike had been a studio musician in Nashville, Tennessee, and played in bands for thirty-plus years, played guitar for many area churches over the years, and was a regular at the Jamboree in Belvedere for many years. He and his band were requested to be the entertainment for a cast party for the Hee Haw show. He was an active and devoted member of Langley Bible Church, where he played guitar in services for many years. Mike was a real jokester. He loved to make people laugh and smile, but most of all, he loved the time spent with his children and grandchildren.
