Luther Weadon Obituary
Luther Weadon "Andy"
CHANTILLY, VA - Luther Anderson (Andy) Weadon, 80, passed peacefully on Monday, January 8, 2024, from congestive heart failure. He was with family at home in Chantilly, Virginia. Andy was born on March 10, 1943, in Aiken, SC, son of the late Nimrod Ashby Weadon, originally from Orlean, VA, and the late Mattie Ellen Wright Weadon, of Aiken.
Andy graduated from Aiken High School in 1961. He earned a varsity letter and was a member of Aiken's track team, which won three championships. Andy graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in business management from the University of Charleston (Morris Harvey College), Charleston, WV, in 1973. Andy graduated with an associate's degree in engineering technology from West Virginia University Institute of Technology in Montgomery, WV, in 1965. He was a member of Psi Delta Fraternity. Though his job required moves to West Virginia and Virginia, Andy often traveled to Aiken to visit family and friends and to attend high school reunions.
After 35 years in the telephone business, Andy retired from Verizon as a Systems Strategic Planning Manager. Andy was instrumental in changing telephone systems from the rotary dial system to touch tone. Later in his career, he worked on a team implementing fiber optics technology.
Andy was a collector of many things, including vinyl records. His enthusiasm began as a teenager, when he spent most of his allowance on 45s. He amassed quite the compilation, including hot-off-the press recordings of Elvis and Johnny Cash, which he enjoyed playing for friends and family throughout his life. He enjoyed music of all genres, especially bluegrass. Andy also collected books, antique toys, and trains.
Andy was a "car guy." His life-long passion for travel began at the age of 16, when he drove his Volkswagen Beetle from Aiken to California along historic Route 66. In 1980, he restored a 1963 Triumph TR3, which he drove along Virginia's country roads. During his lifetime, Andy visited all 50 states, and vacationed in Europe and the Caribbean. At the age of 80, just a few months before his passing, Andy drove to visit family and friends in Aiken and Florida.
Andy was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather. He was predeceased by his wife, Emily, whom he married in 2009. Andy is survived by his daughter, Sharon Weadon Shand, and son-in-law, William (Bill) Shand, of Chantilly, VA; his grandson, William (Billy) Shand, Jr, of New London, CT; and his granddaughter, Natalie Shand, of Auburn, AL. Though remaining life-long friends, his 23-year marriage to Aleta Norosky ended in divorce.
Funeral services were held at Orlean Baptist Church in Marshall, VA, led by Pastor Randy West. Andy's final resting place is the Orlean Cemetery, Orlean, Virginia.
