Lewis Stallings Obituary
On Friday, August 1, 2025, Lewis D. Stallings transitioned from labor to reward at Forest Hills Hospital in Forest Hills, NY at the age of 82.
Lewis was born September 3, 1942 to the late L.D. Stallings Sr. and Annie Bell Craig Stallings. He was the eldest of 11 children. Five of his siblings, Sumpter, Arthur, Ida, Sarah and Esther, preceded him in death.
Lewis was educated in both the Aiken County and Richmond County Public School Systems.
In pursuit of a new beginning, L.D. relocated to Jamaica, NY with his wife, Mary Simmons. Together they had 4 children, Bernard, Karen, Kevin and Teisha. Their eldest son, Bernard, proceeded him in death.
Lewis became a uniformed member of "New York's Strongest", the New York City Department of Sanitation. He served proudly for over 20 years until his official retirement in 1997. After his retirement, he continued to work as a skycap for British Airways, where he encountered some of the world's most elite, flying between JFK and London.
At young age, Lewis joined the Mt. Zion Baptist Church in Beech Island, SC. Upon his return from New York, he continued to attend Mt. Zion until his illness prevented him from doing so. He subsequently returned back to New York and he continued to attend church weekly while in the nursing facility in Brooklyn, NY. Upon his discharge from the nursing home, he returned home and continued to attend services virtually each week.
L.D. leaves to cherish his memory: his wife, Mary, his children, Karen, Kevin (Wendy) and Teisha as well as his "children in loco parentis" KaShawn (Dorcase) and Ayana (Andrew). His daughter-in-law, Diane and his grandchildren, Jared (Amy), LaTesha, Chantel, Shakiera, Epiphany, Jamil (Nayanda), Shanice, Josiah, Juwan, Sharif and Divinia. His great-grandchildren, Danny, Jaden, Jason, Jace, Josiah Jr., Ja'Leigh, Mason, Madison, Jason, N'zinga and Jade. His memory is also cherished by his beloved Aunt Frances and his siblings Essie Mae, Geneva (Jarthur) Marion (Mildred), Elaine (Kenneth) and Johnette as well as his dear cousin with whom he shared a sibling bond, Karen. He is also remembered by NaKisha whom he affectionately considers his daughter as well a host of other family and friends.
