Lewis Rutland Obituary

Lewis Rutland NORTH AUGUSTA, SC - Funeral services for Mr. Lewis Maxwell (Maxie) Rutland, 78, of North Augusta, who entered into rest on April 29, 2017 , will be held Wednesday, May 3, at 11:30 at Mt Calvary Lutheran Church, Johnston. The Revs. Barry Antley and Christy Pursey will officiate. Interment will follow in the church cemetery.
Born in the Mt. Calvary section of Ridge Spring, Edgefield County, he was a son of the late Lewie Maxwell and Olive Kirkland Rutland. He was an active member of St. James Lutheran Church, Graniteville, where he served on various committees including Sunday School Superintendent, Church Council, Outreach, and Property. He was an Aiken County Election Poll manager in North Augusta, and a member of the Graniteville Masonic Lodge # 99 where he served as a Worshipful Master. He volunteered at Byrd Elementary to distribute food backpacks through the Golden Harvest Backpack program, as well as coached Dixie Youth baseball. He proudly served his country for ten years in the SC National Guard during the Vietnam era. He was employed by Graniteville Company as a Supervisor for twenty-six years and was a former owner of Augusta Tire and Wheel for twenty years. He was devoted to his family, cherished his friends, and he loved to work, travel, and help others. He took great pride in his grandchildren and especially enjoyed attending school and athletic events to support them. He was a devout Clemson Tiger fan and treasured time spent hunting and gardening on his farm in Ridge Spring.
He was preceded in death by a sister, Janice Rutland Fulmer, and a brother, John Oscar Rutland.
He is survived by his devoted wife of 55 years, Sara Fulmer Rutland; a son, Rodney Maxwell (Nan) Rutland, Anderson, SC, a daughter, Sara Anne (Kevin) Ratcliffe, North Augusta, a special niece, Janet Lynn (Michel) Rodgers, Ridge Spring, a brother, James Carlton (Shirley) Rutland, Ridge Spring, a sister in law, Glinda Rutland, Ridge Spring, and five grandchildren, Hana, Liesel, and Gretchen Rutland, Hampton and Sara Davis Ratcliffe.
The family will receive friends in the church education building following the service. Pallbearers will be his nephews: Anthony Fulmer, Jason Fulmer, Neal Fulmer, Jeff Morris, Michael Morris, Darrin Rutland, and Gary Rutland. Honorary pallbearers will include: Carter Asbill, Gene Ray Fulmer, Ronnie Horne, Cort Proctor, Michel Rodgers, Joe Taylor, and Ronald Wood.
In lieu of flowers, the family has respectfully requested that memorials be made to St James Lutheran Church, 200 Laurel Drive, Graniteville, SC 29829.

I haven't seen Maxie very many times since high school, but I remember him very pleasantly as an expert outfielder and a good guy. I know from talking to him, talking to others over the years, and his obituary, that his was a life well lived. My condolences to his family.
