Leona Burris Obituary

Leona Burris
AIKEN - Mrs. Leona Burris, age 89, formerly of 221 Jehossee Drive, departed this life Tuesday, February 7, 2023 at home in Columbia, SC. Funeral services will be held at 1 PM Wednesday, February 15, 2023 at Ocean Grove Baptist Church, 12 Ocean Grove Rd, Aiken, SC. She will lie in state at Ocean Grove from 12-1 PM. Burial will follow in the Church Cemetery.
Leona White Burris was born April 1, 1933, in Elko, Barnwell County, South Carolina to the late Dea. Phiniszy and Nora White. At an early age, she accepted Jesus as her personal savior and was baptized at the Buck Creek Baptist Church in Elko, SC. She attended Barnwell County Public Schools. Later, after relocating to Aiken, SC she joined the Ocean Grove Baptist Church. Throughout her membership at Ocean Grove her life was one of service; to her family, church family, and community. She served the kingdom in several capacities including Women's Home Missions and Senior Choir President. She used her gifted voice singing praises to God throughout her tenure at Ocean Grove until she was no longer able. She also served the Ocean Grove church family in the capacity of church mother for nearly 50 years. Mrs. Burris' work career included time with Aiken County Public Schools, Pyle-National, Graniteville Company, and ASCO, where she retired in 1995. She united in holy matrimony to Dea. Roddie Burris, Jr., who preceded her in death. To this union, five children were born. She later married Dea. Christopher Chandler of Aiken, SC, who also preceded her in death.
To cherish the memories of her life, she leaves all of her children, Larry, Velma, Roddie III, Renard (Juandra), and Alan; nine grandchildren, Nakeisha, Tanika, Evan, Brandon, Ajia, Adrienne, Lauren, Maria, and Elizabeth; four great-grandchildren, Zion, Rayahlynn, Harper, and Alexander; one sister, Alice Mae Smith, a host of loving nieces, nephews, cousins, and a host of other relatives and loving friends. Friends may visit JACKSON-BROOKS FUNERAL HOME, 126 Fairfield St. SE, Aiken, SC 29801, 803 649-6123 Tuesday from 3-7 PM.
