AIKEN, SC - Larry Gene Turner, 73, passed away Tuesday, September 20, 2016.
Mr. Turner was born in Kokomo, IN, son of the late Donald Turner and Ruth Edwards. He moved to the CSRA in 1984, where he began his career as an electrician. Through diligent work, continuing education, and the determination for which he was known, Larry retired as an electrical engineer at Savannah River Site.
Larry is survived by his beloved wife, Yurie O'Connor Turner; daughters, Yanina Mangen, Chicago, IL, Michelle (Lynn) Ghant, Windsor, SC, Deborah T. (Robert) Williams, Williston, SC, Elena T. (Fiance; Paul Copson) Egbert, Aiken; sons, J. Ross (Jennifer) Smith, Aiken, Larry A. (Christa) Turner, Aiken; 19 grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren, and three sisters, Carolyn (Bill) Fording, Cape Coral, FL, Penny (Dan) McCain, Kokomo, IN, Tina (Mike) Gerhart, Kokomo, IN. He was preceded in death by a brother, Donald Turner.
Larry was a proud and devoted family man. His greatest honor was his marriage of over 50 years to his beloved wife and best friend, Yurie O'Connor Turner. His children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren brought him immeasurable joy.
Larry was a proud veteran of the United States Army. He was an accomplished cook who was happiest when his family gathered around his home-made dinners. He was a tremendously skilled craftsman, and his wife and children have many memories of his life's work and his devotion as a provider.
Larry fought a valiant fight against kidney disease. His final moments were at home with his beloved wife holding his hand, surrounded by his children and grandchildren. He has rejoined his previously departed loved ones in the Kingdom of Heaven.
The family would like to express their gratitude to Regency Hospice, BeWell Home Services, and especially his in-home caregiver of the last year, Ms. Cindy Jackson.
A memorial service will be held at 11:00 AM Saturday, September 24 in the Shellhouse Funeral Home Chapel, Hayne Ave., officiated by Pastor Heyward Horton, with United States Army Military Honors. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to The National Kidney Foundation, 30 East 33rd St., New York, NY 10016. A private internment will take place at Beaufort National Cemetery at a later date.
