Kathryn Windham Obituary

Mrs. Kathryn "Kitty" Huntley Windham
AIKEN, SC - Mrs. Kathryn "Kitty" Huntley Windham, 89, passed away Saturday, November 1, 2014.
Mrs. Windham was born on October 30, 1925, in Mt. Croghan, SC, to the late Johnson David and Lucy Burch Huntley.
After finishing high school, Mrs. Windham graduated from Wingate Junior College and Coker College and later received her Masters Degree in Education from USC.
She and her late husband Roland Windham moved to Aiken in 1963 where she taught fourth grade at Aiken Elementary for many years.
For over 50 years she was a member of the local chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma Society International, an organization for key women educators, where she served in many capacities including president.
Mrs. Windham loved Aiken which was shown through her participation with various organizations including Rotary Club of Aiken, Country Gardeners Garden Club, Town and Country, Aiken Regional Medical Center where she was the head of the pharmacy volunteers for 30 years, Mended Hearts, Aiken Women's Heart Board, Aiken Area Council on Aging Volunteer delivering Meals on Wheels, City of Aiken Farmers Market Study Committee, Aiken County Alcohol and Drug Abuse Board, and Friends of Hopelands and Rye Patch.
Since 2010 she has served on the United Way Residential Campaign and was thrilled that they recently met goal.
In 2000 she was named Woman of the Year by the Greater Aiken Chamber of Commerce. She was a committed member of First Baptist Church, Aiken serving as a former Deacon and choir member. She was a teacher of the Joy Seekers Sunday School class and served on numerous church committees.
Along with her husband Roland, she was an avid Gamecock fan through thick and thin (mostly thin) and was a faithful supporter until her death. She never missed an opportunity to play bridge as evidenced by her membership in many bridge clubs.
She loved being in the kitchen and enjoyed cooking delicious Southern-style meals and other goodies for her family and many friends. She was the consummate hostess and welcomed friends and strangers alike into her home.
She is survived by her daughters, Cindy W. (Ed) Duryea, Beaufort, SC, Jane W. (Robert) Key, Columbia, SC; a son, Roland H. (Donna) Windham, Jr., Mt. Pleasant, SC; Grandchildren: Katy Duryea (Luke Nemuras), Huntley Duryea (Gloria), Roland H. "Tripp" Windham III, Amelia Windham, Logan Windham, Windy Key and Sally Key and great granddaughter Seabrook Duryea.
She was devoted to her family and was always ready to join them in any adventure. She said many times, "If you don't want me to go with you, don't ask me."
She was the epitome of a Southern lady who will be missed by so many who she loved and who loved her.
A private family burial will be held Tuesday, November 4, 2014 at Historic Bethany Cemetery followed by a memorial service at First Baptist Church, Aiken at 11:00 AM with the Rev. Dr. Fred Andrea, III officiating. A reception will be held in the church Family Life Center following the service.
Memorials may be directed to Aiken's First Baptist Church, P.O. Box 3157, Aiken, SC 29802 or to the Aiken Heart Association, 1003 Hammond Rd. SW Aiken, SC 29803.

Jane,Roland and Cindy, my deepest sympathies to you and your families. I will always treasure the childhood memorries of your mother. I recently visited with your mother and commented on how she has not changed in 30 years. Always smiling. I think of her every time I eat a chocolate kiss because of the p-nut butter cookies she always shared with us at Christmas! We will miss her dearly.

SPECIAL BEATTUTUDES for those who work with special people

BLESSED ARE YOU who take time to listen to difficult speech

FOR YOU help us know that if we persevere, we can be understood.

BLESSED ARE YOU who walk with us in public places and ignore the stares of strangers,

FOR in your companionship, we find havens of relaxation.

BLESSED ARE YOU who never bid us "hurry up" and more blessed, you who do not snatch our tasks from our hands to do them for us

FOR often we need time rather than help.

BLESSED ARE YOU who stand beside us as we enter new and untried ventures,

FOR our failures will be outweighed by times when we surprise ourselves and you.

BLESSED ARE YOU who ask for our help

FOR our greatest need is to be needed.

BLESSED ARE YOU who help us with the graciousness of Christ.

FOR oftentimes we need the help we cannot ask for.

BLESSED ARE YOU when, by all these things you assure us that the thing that makes us individuals is not in our peculiar muscles, not in our wounded nervous systems, nor in our difficulties in learning

BUT in the God-given self which no infirmity can confine.

REJOICE AND BE EXCEEDINGLY GLAD, and know that you give us reassurances that could never be spoken in words,

FOR you deal with us as Christ dealt with all His children.
