Kathleen Sue "Kathy" Miles

Kathleen Miles Obituary

Kathleen 'Kathy' Sue Miles
AIKEN - Kathleen (Kathy) Sue Miles joined Heaven's choir of angels following a long, courageous battle against breast cancer on April 6th. She was surrounded by her loving family as she passed peacefully and faithfully to be with her Lord.
Kathy was born in Milwaukee, WI on April 21st, 1955 and lived there until 1969 when the family moved to Florida. She graduated from Eastern Carolina University with a degree in Music Therapy. She worked as a Music therapist and Activities director at Lowman Nursing home, followed by working for the Governor's Commission on Aging. Most recently she was the Clinical Research Director at Augusta Medical University.
Kathy's passion for music flowed into many of the activities she loved; playing the piano, writing music, directing the church choir, and ballroom dancing (where she met her husband Howard). She also enjoyed traveling with family and friends, was an avid Packer fan, enjoyed walks on the beach and the sound of the ocean. She and her family made an annual trip to Wisconsin to attend the Iola car show and spend time with relatives in Wautoma, WI. Kathy was active in her church and several volunteer groups.
On June 24th, 2000, Kathy married Howard Bruce Miles. They were married in Charleston and entertained their guests with an especially beautiful ballroom dance together. It was magical to watch. They moved to Aiken, South Carolina where they raised two incredible children. Regina is attending the Citadel and Val intends to go to the University of SC, Aiken, this coming fall.
Kathy is survived by her loving husband Howard, children Regina and Val, her mother Terry Girdauskas, brothers Brian (Linda), Bruce (Carol), Paul (Natalie), a sister Cindy (Garth), and many cousins, nieces and nephews. Preceding Kathy in passing was her father, Gil (Terry) and her "adopted" brother Gerry (Kris). She is also survived by Howard's mother and father, three brothers, two sisters and their spouses. She gave her love generously to all of her family members and many dear friends.
There will be a visitation on Friday, April 13th at 9:30 am at St. Augustine of Canterbury Episcopal Church. The church is located at 1630 Silver Bluff Rd., Aiken. A celebration of her life will take place at 11:00 am following the visitation. Father Dan Wagner will celebrate and Father Dale Klitzke will preach. Kathy will be interred at the church's columbarium.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to St. Augustine of Canterbury in Aiken, SC or the Augusta University Cancer Center, 1120 15th St., Augusta, Georgia 30912.
The family would like to thank all those who helped with her care.
Psalm 95:1 "Come, let us sing for joy to the Lord; let us shout aloud to the Rock of our salvation."
"Music speaks what cannot be expressed, soothes the mind and gives it rest; heals the heart and makes it whole, flows from Heaven to the soul." Unknown.

I know for many of us, this is a sad time, as we reflect on the loss of a dear friend and colleague. However, this is also a time when, I personally reflect on the strength and poise that Kathy demonstrated throughout her illness and in her determination to continue fighting. She was truly a great example, a great mentor to clinical research professionals, working with them to develop their skills, abilities, and understanding of the clinical research process and working to advance clinical research in this region. I know from talking with Kathy, and working with her over the past few years that she believed in her work, whether in research, in the clinics, or with patient advocacy groups, but more than anything, she was a proud mother. She spoke often of Regina and Vals accomplishments and of the joy that they brought to her life. I know that Kathy will be watching over you all and is exceptionally proud of you! Praying for you all to have peace at this time.

I'm so sorry to hear of this loss of my co-worker; it is especially bitter that we didn't get to celebrate her career and well-deserved retirement. I offer my sincere condolences to Kathy's family, whom I'm sure were looking forward to her retirement as much as she was. It just breaks my heart that after all she went through, she didn't get to enjoy a life of leisure in her final days. I wish her spirit peace.

My dearest friend - I will hold onto our years growing up together in Milwaukee - the koolade and popcorn stands, walking up and down the street in the vintage clothes your parents had - riding up and down the block in one of your dad's vintage cars - - and then girl scout camp. There are so many memories - - Rest now in peace my friend - heaven is much brighter now with you. Love you always Bookworm! Peanut (Denise Hansen)
