Joyce Grant Obituary

Jackson, SC – A Celebration of Life for Joyce Lillian Blackmon Grant, 95, who entered into heavenly rest September 7, 2025, will be held this Saturday afternoon at 2 o'clock at Bethel Methodist Church. The family will receive friends at the church one hour prior to the service. Born on August 8, 1930, in Augusta, Georgia, Joyce spent her formative years in Chester, S.C. She is survived by son, Ron (Shelia); daughters, Beverly Sherman and Sherry Grant; grandson, Austin Grant (Jessica) and great-grandchildren, Declan, Ainsley and Finn; plus, a multitude of loving nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her beloved husband of 55 years, Tom; father, Garfield Blackmon and mother, Manie B. Flenniken; stepfather William (Bill); sisters, Mary Saylors, Jean Page, Nancy Grant, brother, Jim Blackmon; and son-in-law Ed Sherman. Tom often used the diminutive "Joy" when speaking to or about her, a perfect description of what she brought to her family, and virtually anyone she met. Joyce never met a stranger, and her exuberance for life, coupled with a ready smile, reflected a deep and abiding kindness for others. At 16, she began her professional banking career with the Commercial Bank in Chester. She retired as a Vice President with First Citizens Bank in the Beech Island, S.C. branch. Her position and caring nature gave her a unique opportunity to respond to the financial needs of the Jackson-Beech Island communities. She always wanted to help when she could. Joyce became a member of Bethel United Methodist Church in 1954. For over 70 years she supported the Bethel family in a variety of roles, from Sunday school teacher to president of the United Methodist Women. The women of Bethel are known for their culinary skills, and Joyce developed a reputation for her pecan pies, red velvet cakes, and homemade breads. There was international interest in her macaroni and cheese. Outdoor recreation was also a big part of Joyce and Tom's married life. From a primitive camp on the Savannah River, to a more permanent residence on Lake Wylie, they spent countless glorious hours with their immediate and extended family - fishing, boating and swimming. Last month, daughters Bev and Sherry, organized The Birthday Road Tour to help Joyce mark her 95th birthday. They visited with 33 family members across the Palmetto State, celebrating a remarkable life, one well-lived, filled with…"Joy." Memorials may be made to Bethel Methodist Church, P.O. Box 497, Jackson, S.C. 29831.
