Johnny crook was a southern gentlemen that was always ready to mentor us young up and coming fire chiefs. Even though we would usually only see each other once a year for the annual fire chief symposium. I will never forget the last fire conference that was held in Philadelphia PA. Before I left to the airport we were sitting outside together and I asked if he had any advice for. E being a newly appointed chief ?
He said mr James sir I have 3 things for being a good fire chief ...
1. Do what is right even though you face resistance .
2. Be honest with yourself and your team
3. Own your responsibilities as the fire chief
Those 3 things stuck with me throughout my career.
I would see Johnny from time to time when I became the chairperson for the FLCT later training chief for the RISK PROTECTION LEADERSHIP TEAM
he stopped me and thanked me for delivering confined space supervisor training for the entire team during the RPLT annual meeting (which would be our last face to face ) and Said "I´m proud of you boy" !
Rest In Peace mr Crook
We got it from here !

I had the pleasure of meeting Johnny in 2018, during my first couple of years at Kimberly-Clark. During a work trip to the Beech Island plant, Johnny was a great host to both my colleague and I, driving us around the site in a golf cart, showing all the unique aspects of the area and making sure we tried one of his favorite local restaurants (without forgetting a peach pie for dessert). He was a kind and very thoughtful man and will be truly missed.
