John Edward Roy
AIKEN - John Edward Roy, 87, ended his life's journey peacefully on Monday, January 22, 2024, with the love and support of his wife of 62 years Phyllis H. Roy, and their three children. A native of Huntington, WV, John was the son of the late Dennis and Marjorie Main Roy. He graduated from Marshall University with a B.S. in Chemistry.
Additional survivors include daughter Johnna Roy (Gresham, OR), son Cameron Roy (Duluth, GA), and son Jeff Hanshaw (Houston, TX), numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
After John's 35-year retirement from the Specialty Metals Industry, he and Phyllis came to South Carolina, first to Callawassie Island, and finally settling in Aiken for the past 21 years.
John joined the Palmetto Golf Club in 2003 and immediately offered his marketing and leadership skills to the Club. He assisted with the Palmetto Amateur Tournament for 20 years and served as Golf Co-Chairman for 5 years, retiring in 2022. In January 2023, the Palmetto Board of Governors awarded John Honorary Member status. He cherished this honor.
John was continually active with the SC Junior Golf Association, and he served on their Board for several years. He resolutely believed the future of the game of golf depended on mentoring young players, and he was passionately devoted to this cause.
The family will receive friends on Saturday afternoon, February 3rd beginning at 1:00 at Shellhouse-Rivers Funeral Home. The funeral service begins at 2:00 with The Rev. Jason Hammersley officiating. A reception follows at South Aiken Presbyterian Church. Internment will be in Woodmere Memorial Park, Huntington, WV, later.
