John Butler Obituary

John Munro "Jack" Butler, Jr.
AIKEN - Mr. John Munro "Jack" Butler, Jr., beloved husband of Gail Keppel Butler, passed away Tuesday, July 08, 2014.
A memorial service will be held Saturday July 12, 2014 at 1:00 pm at St. Thaddeus Episcopal Church. The Rev. Joseph Whitehurst will officiate. Honorary pallbearers are Major Thompson, David Howard, Worth Swearingen and Ed Schneider. Interment will follow in the church cemetery. The family will then receive friends in the Stevenson-McClelland building.
Jack was born April 19, 1939 in Brooklyn, NY to the late John Munro and Dorothy Molloy Butler. He attended St. Peter's Prep School in Peekskill, NY and Union College in Schenectady NY. He spent his career working in the banking industry. He was a resident of Allendale, NJ for 32 years. In his spare time, he served the community. He worked on the Board of Education at Northern Highlands Regional High School for two terms and was also an active member of the band parents association. He volunteered with the Holiday Observers, a men's service organization and was known as "Santa Claus" and the "Easter Bunny" to the delight of the children of the town for over 30 years. In addition, he sang in the choir at the Church of the Good Shepherd in Midland Park, NJ, participated on the vestry and served twice as the Warden. He also enjoyed woodworking and made Christmas ornaments for several years to benefit the Church bazaar.
After moving to Aiken in 2000, Jack became a member of St. Thaddeus Episcopal Church, where he sang with the choir and the balcony musicians as well. He also served on the Vestry. He was a volunteer for Aiken Habitat for Humanity, a member of the "Friday Crew" and served on the board. He sang with the Masterworks Chorale, was an avid golfer, and belonged to the Houndslake Country club.
In addition to his wife, Jack is survived by his two daughters: Heather (Neil) Karol, Oakridge, NJ, Holly (Scott) Arisman, Mahwah, NJ; one son, John Butler, III, Portland, ME; a sister, Harriet Boyden, Aiken, SC and a brother David (Mary) Butler of Washington, NJ.
In lieu of flowers, memorials in Jack's name may be directed to St. Thaddeus Episcopal Church, 125 Pendleton St. SW., Aiken, SC 29801 or to the Aiken County Habitat for Humanity, 1026 Park Ave. SE, Aiken, SC 29801.

We who have known Jack have known a cheery fellow, ready to chuckle at the curiosities and the eccentricities of life, at other humans and himself. Jack was also a serious study of other people's needs and was in service for God, in heart and mind. He was a great person to call friend, acquaintance or colleague.
While in the Balcony Musicians team at St. Thaddeus in years past, Barbara and I enjoyed Jack's tenor (or close to it), and sometimes his “falsetto for fun” as we prayed and praised with music next to him and others around. Great memories; he enjoyed song so much. He leaves his love for all of us to keep in touch with him, as we do now in remembering Jack Butler. Thanks Jack, and give Jesus a hug for us too!!
Respectfully, to Gail,
