Jimmy Chavous Obituary

Jimmy Chavous
AIKEN, SC - Mr. Jimmy Chavous, age 71, of 1391 Williston Rd, husband
of TeVerra Peterson Chavous, passed away Saturday, May 21, 2016 at his residence.
Funeral services will be held 1:30 PM Friday, May 27, 2016 at Zion Hill Baptist Church, (Viewing 12:30-1:30), 130 Independent Blvd, Aiken, SC. Burial will follow in the John Chavous Family Cemetery, 1400 Graymare Hollow Rd, Aiken, SC 29803 across from St. Mark Missionary Baptist Church.
He leaves to cherish his memory: his loving wife, TeVerra Peterson Chavous; a daughter, Matea Chavous (Augusta, GA); three sons, Jamie Oscar Chavous (St Louis, MO), Corey Lamonte Chavous (St Charles, MO), Brandon Robinson (Augusta, GA); a sister, Annie Chavous Cook (Charles) Augusta, GA; two brothers, Elroy Chavous and Barney Chavous (Odessa); a host of other relatives and friends.
Mr. Chavous was born in the Kathwood Community of Aiken County, South Carolina, the second of six children to the late Mary Larke Chavous and the late Barney Oscar Chavous. He remained active in his childhood church -Saint Mark Baptist-throughout his adulthood, during which time he was ordained deacon, later becoming head of the Deacon Board. Jimmy was married to TeVerra Peterson Chavous, the union from which came their three children: Jamie (son), Corey (son), and Matea (daughter) and for Jimmy a son, Brandon Robinson.
Jimmy attended Sleepy Hollow Elementary and Martha Schofield High Schools, intermittently apprenticing in automotive mechanics at his Uncle McKinley Chavous' garage before joining the U.S. Army in 1962, where Automotive Mechanics also became his M.O.S. Upon Jimmy's Army discharge, he enrolled in the Army Reserve, followed by his employment as a Transmission Specialist at the McElmurray Pontiac dealership in Aiken, SC. Amidst that employment and per his reputation as a gifted mechanic, he was offered an automotive mechanics teaching position at Augusta Area Technical School (aka Augusta Technical College) in Augusta, GA, where he accepted and remained for twelve years. During this same period, he was also pursued for a similar position at Midlands Tech of South Carolina. He has many in-service trainings and certificates to his credit and enrolled in continuous coursework at Georgia Southern University to maintain vocational education and teaching certification. Subsequent to leaving Augusta Tech, Jimmy operated his own business, Chavous Garage, housed in a family-owned building which he renovated to meet the repair needs of a progressing automotive technology. Within this framework evolved an automotive parts sales' component in which he incorporated as a resource for his customers' auto repairs, as well as contracting to supply auto parts to Westinghouse Savannah River Co. At the 14th year interval of Jimmy's proprietorship, he was pursued by Richmond County Board of Education for a Vocational Education teaching position at Lucy Laney High School in Augusta, GA, where he went on board for the next 11 years until his retirement in 2004. Jimmy adjusted his operation of Chavous Garage to his level of comfort while being engaged in outside employment and after retirement until the onset of his recent illness.
Jimmy can be described as a self-made, productive individual, who carried such banners as 'surrogate parent to his younger siblings', 'survivor', and one who spoke to the gregarious character of 'loving to cook for and feed others'. He inherited the knack for making excellent pit-cooked barbecue and carried on the family tradition in business for a while, reduced it to holidays, and finally prepared it only for family and close friends on holidays. The irony on that was endless 'FEEDBACK' he received from feeding others! People also sought him out-past and present-just to chat or witness his character in action. Former students return in appreciation and to update him on the application of his teaching in their lives. He referenced these visits with much pride! Though complex in nature, Jimmy's appeal was magnetic. His way of giving back to his community was to often charge reduced rates or to have no charge at all for his auto repair services. He took pride in the quality more than in the quantity of his work.
Friends may call the home between the hours of 4pm-7pm Thursday or JACKSON-BROOKS FUNERAL HOME, 126 Fairfield St. SE, Aiken, SC 29801 beginning 3PM Thursday.
Visitation will be held Thursday, May 26, 2016 at St Mark Missionary Baptist Church from 6-8pm.

My condolences to the family of the late Mr. Chavous. I happened upon this guest book while searching for someone else. I do not know
Mr. Chavous, but wonder if I may have known Mrs. Chavous during our childhood days when my parents and I would make our annual visits to Ridge Spring. Then, no trip was complete without several trips to "Cousin Missy's" (Mrs. Thomas) store...Mrs. Thomas had a granddaughter named Tevera Peterson. Perhaps this is all a coincidence. Either way, I pray you are comforted by our Heavenly Father. God bless you and your family.

Jamie and Corey, I am very sorry to hear about the death of your father. I know that a man who raised fine sons as yourselves was a fine man (the fruit does not fall far from the tree). I pray for God's comfort for you and your family.

To my dearest family, some things I'd like to say...
but first of all, to let you know, that I arrived okay.
I'm writing this from heaven. Here I dwell with God above.
Here, there's no more tears of sadness; here is just eternal love.

Please do not be unhappy just because I'm out of sight.
Remember that I'm with you every morning, noon and night.
That day I had to leave you when my life on earth was through,
God picked me up and hugged me and He said, "I welcome you."

It's good to have you back again; you were missed while you were gone.
As for your dearest family, they'll be here later on.
I need you here badly; you're part of my plan.
There's so much that we have to do, to help our mortal man.

God gave me a list of things, that he wished for me to do.
And foremost on the list, was to watch and care for you.
And when you lie in bed at night, the day's chores put to flight.
God and I are closest to you....in the middle of the night.

When you think of my life on earth, and all those loving years
because you are only human, they are bound to bring you tears.
But do not be afraid to cry; it does relieve the pain.
Remember there would be no flowers, unless there was some rain.

I wish that I could tell you all that God has planned.
But if I were to tell you, you wouldn't understand.
But one thing is for certain, though my life on earth is o'er.
I'm closer to you now, than I ever was before.

There are many rocky roads ahead of you and many hills to climb;
but together we can do it by taking one day at a time.
It was always my philosophy and I'd like it for you too...
that as you give unto the world, the world will give to you.

If you can help somebody who's in sorrow and pain,
then you can say to God at night......"My day was not in vain."
And now I am contented....that my life has been worthwhile,
knowing as I passed along the way, I made somebody smile.

So if you meet somebody who is sad and feeling low,
just lend a hand to pick him up, as on your way you go.
When you're walking down the street, and you've got me on your mind;
I'm walking in your footsteps only half a step behind.

And when it's time for you to go.... from that body to be free,
remember you're not going.....you're coming here to me.

I had the pleasure of working with Mr. Chavous at Lucy Laney High School. I felt a kinship with him upon finding out he was from the Aiken area and his mother-in-law was my 6tth grade teacher at Pinecrest Elementary in Aiken. He was very much appreciated for his concern, kindness and sharing his automotive skills with the staff of Laney.

My sincere prayers and thoughts are with Mrs. Chavous and family.
