Jane Gantt
AIKEN - Jane Jones Gantt - mother, grandmother, great grandmother, and someone who treasured her family with her heart - passed away peacefully on January 1, 2023 at the age of 94 surrounded by her loving family. Jane was born to Emory Carl and Honor Hendricks Jones in Easley, SC on September 8, 1928. She graduated from Easley High School before attending Erskine College in Due West, SC leaving with an associate degree. After studying at Roper Hospital in Charleston, SC, toward a degree in nursing, she met the love of her life, Aubrey Doyle Gantt Sr., who was interning after earning his medical degree at the Medical College of South Carolina. Married in 1948, Jane and Aubrey eventually moved to Williston, SC to start his practice in family medicine and where they raised their family. Daughter Rebecca was born in 1950 while he completed his military service in New London, CT. Once they were in Williston son Doyle was born in 1951, and son George was born in 1953. During these years Jane and Aubrey were faithful members of Holy Trinity Lutheran Church in Pelion, SC. In 2008 Jane and Aubrey retired to Spartanburg, SC where they lived in Summit Hills Retirement Community and became members of St. John's Lutheran Church. In November of 2022, Jane moved to Trinity on Laurens in Aiken, SC.
Through the years Jane developed a mastery of cooking and found great joy in preparing meals for her family. That accomplishment and love of cooking was passed down to her children and grandchildren.
With loving care, she made clothes and costumes for her children's school activities. Her love of working with fabrics and crafts evolved into the intricate art of tatting where she produced many delicate lace treasures.
Ornamental gardening became a joy and source of gratification to Jane. Her husband's love of vegetable gardening and overzealous production of produce necessitated her becoming proficient in the process of canning. Canning was necessary but not particularly enjoyable. Although not a fan of outdoor pursuits, she was a leader of a Girl Scout troop in Williston and hiked the troop 5 miles south of town to Gantt farm for overnight camping.
Jane had a passion for playing bridge and belonged to various clubs while living in Williston and Spartanburg. Her love of games also included Scrabble, Crosswords, and Sudoku.
The source of Jane's joy of family was instilled while growing up along with her mother in her maternal grandparent's home in Easley, SC. Five uncles and four aunts, several of whom were closer in age to being siblings, were the basis of her intense pride in and lifelong devotion to her Hendricks kinfolk.
Jane was preceded in death by her husband Aubrey and her parents Carl and Honor, as well as her granddaughter Rachel Gantt.
She is survived by her daughter Rebecca (Reggie) Hill of Spartanburg, SC; sons Aubrey Doyle (Gail) Gantt Jr. of Aiken, SC, and George Gantt (Beth) of Aiken, SC; grandchildren Heather (David) Hill Kochamba of Smyrna, GA, Martin (Stephanie) Hill of Travelers Rest, SC, and Lauren (Larry) Gantt Simonson of Greenville, SC; great grandchildren David Asher Kochamba, Aubrey Isabel Hill, and Theodore Lawrence Simonson; a niece, Robin Anne Lawther of London, England; and many beloved cousins.
In her memory, donations can be made to Holy Trinity Lutheran Church, PO Box 126, Pelion, SC 29123. The family would like to extend its heartfelt gratitude to the wonderful caregivers at Trinity on Laurens, Daybreak Home Care Services, and Regency Hospice, all of Aiken, SC.
