James Walters Obituary

James Walters
AIKEN - James Joseph Walters, 73, peacefully departed this earthly life on November 28, 2022 in his home in Aiken, South Carolina.
James was born on January 17, 1949 in Elizabeth, New Jersey. He spent most of his life on or near the ocean, working as a Marine Mechanic, Marina Owner, and Ship's Captain. A tireless worker, James owned and operated a small but successful marina and marine engine shop, Advanced Marine Services of Jupiter, Florida, for 30 years. In 1989, James met Phoebe Connell in Juno Beach, Florida. They fell in love immediately and were married in 1991.
James worked hard and played hard. When he wasn't fixing, cleaning, or cooking something, he could often be found fishing, diving, boating, playing guitar, or bringing a party to life. In his later years, golf became a passion for him. He was also a legendary storyteller; the hilarious tales he told of his myriad jaw-dropping adventures will never be forgotten by his family and friends. Anyone who knew James knew that he loved and cared for his family deeply.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Edward and Alice Walters, and brother, Ned Walters. He is survived by his wife, Phoebe Walters (nee Connell), his brother, Tom Walters, his step-son, Joshua (Adrienne) Eastlake, his step-daughter Jessica (John) Marunowski, three grandchildren, Lydia, Isaac, and Grady, several loving in-laws, and countless friends. No services will be held at this time. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Tunnels to Towers (t2t.org).

Phoebe ... I AM SO SHOCKED TO SEE THIS!!! The last time James sent me a message was of your wedding with my sister marrying the two of you!!! I hunted for the photo, but currently, cant find it as I'm packing my home for a move!

I was so surprised to read of his passing! There are some people that are shining stars and we never think they'll pass! Just like both Jim and my dad!

My previous FB was hacked and I created a new one and we lost touch! When I saw posts of his passing tonight, I was COMPLETELY shocked!

I am so very sorry for your loss and I am I in shock of "wild man" leaving this earth!

I pray you're ok and have been able to move on till the two of you are together again!!

I'm praying for you tonight and James's spirit! I hope you and your beautiful daughter are finding your way!

I so remember our crazy years together!

Love you both!

So sorry to hear that James Walters passed away. He was a kind and successful man. When he owned Advanced Marine Services, I was a sales rep for Nautical Supply. He was one of our customers. I remember a sailboat that was docked at his marina, and the boat was owned by Crosby, Stills & Nash. The group was on tour and the captain was docked with the sailboat at James´ marina. Most sincere condolences to friends and family.

James met my Mom when I was still in high school, and I absolutely adored his giving and fun demeanor from day one...and I knew that my Mom was truly in loving and incredibly caring hands with James. He knew how to make us laugh and always knew how to choose kindness above all else. His smile was a reflection of his genuine giving heart. The stories! We will forever cherish the memories and piles and piles of stories told with such a killer laugh which is truly, uniquely James. I am forever in his debt for caring for my Mom for all of those years, and he gave to my brother and I with a fondness and appreciation that was nothing but genuine. We laughed and shared stories even during his last week of life ~ he adored all of his friends and acquaintances, and had a love for life that a rare few can match. His musical and mechanical talent were known by many, and those who were at my wedding will never forget him getting up and surprising us with his own "Rolling Tide" performance...that meant the world to me.

James will truly be missed, and we should all celebrate our love for his place in our hearts.

It was always a pleasure to share a greeting with Jim when walking Milo on the trail. Neither of us had a loss for words & I´m so happy to share this pic of him with `Shug´. May he rest in the peace of Christ & may you be comforted Phoebe with the love of those gathered around you during this sad time. You all will be in our prayers.

My old friend James Walters has passed away. The most positive person I have ever met. "Captain" James started his business Advanced Marine Services Inc in a mobile van on Miami Beach back in the late 1960's. I met James around 1973. Enjoyed a lot of good times with him including a bicycle trip from Miami Beach up the coast to Jacksonville back in 1976. It was on that trip that James fell in love with the Jupiter area and soon moved up there to work at Conch Cove Marina. He later re-opened Advanced Marine Services along with Craig Bashore after Conch Cove burned down in a fire. I joined Advanced Marine in 1982 after leaving my operators job at the town water plant. We worked together to secure loans to expand the business to its final location on County Line Road and US Hwy 1 in Martin County.
James was the life of the party but also believed in hard work. He created a lot of good will and expanded the customer base with his professional service and good nature. I left AMS Inc in 1987 due to some personal matters. Though disappointing, this opened the door to a career with NOAA Fisheries which I worked for 30 years. Throughout this time James and I remained friends. He got me into playing the guitar and song writing back in 1985, which he did for a while before that. I learned a lot of how to be more outgoing and sociable with people from being in his company. He will be missed by many. Farewell James Walters and Godspeed.

Jim and I played a lot of golf together, shared stories of our early lives, and shared things of great importance to our hearts. He loved his dogs, an I mine. He adored his wife, and I mine. He loved his country and I mine. He was my first passenger after I got my pilot license. He attended my late wife´s memorial service. Because he was above all else, a loyal friend. A truly good friend. I will miss him always. RIp my old and true friend.

James Aka Wildman. There aren´t enough words to describe you. I never saw you without a smile on your face. Your love for your wife "Dolly" was an amazing love story. Everyone was a friend to you. You never had a bad word to say, you saw good in everyone. Your stories were amazing and you did have many. I was blessed to have been one of them. I will see you again my friend. I will miss our chats. I love you and I know many do. God bless you and keep that boat engine running to pick me up when my time comes. You will be missed by all that knew you. Smooth sailing. Love, Debby Dubey
