James Scott Obituary

James Wesley Scott, entered into rest August 31, 2025. Born March 15, 1938, in Augusta, GA, Mr. Scott was a life-long resident of Augusta with the exception of his college years. After graduating from The Academy of Richmond County in 1956, he pursued his Bachelor of Science degree in Agriculture, first at Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College and then at The University of Georgia, where he completed his degree in 1961. He was a member of the Alpha Gamma Rho Fraternity. While attending The University of Georgia, he married his wife of 66 years, Margaret Ann Ligon. Mr. Scott owned and operated Scott's Meat Packers from 1968-1986. He then started Timberlake Properties where he focused on real estate and appraisals until retiring in 2024. Mr. Scott proudly served on the Augusta Richmond County Board of Assessors for many years. He was a member of Burns Memorial United Methodist Church. Mr. Scott was a proud and devoted father. He coached many of his sons' Masters City baseball teams and shared his passion for golf with his sons. He continued to play regularly in his later years and was proud to have "shot his age" on several occasions. James loved spending time outdoors. He was an avid hunter and fisherman and enjoyed planting flowers, gathering pecans, mowing grass, and picking up pine cones. James is survived by his wife, Margaret Ann Ligon Scott; three children, Melanie Scott, James Wesley Scott Jr. (Sandra), and Jeff Scott (Angie); three grandchildren, Logan McElmurray (Nyci), Cody McElmurray (Brittany), and Shelby Scott; three great-grandchildren, and two siblings, Cleo Scott Shields and Milton Scott. He was preceded in death by his parents, Raburn and Alma Scott. In lieu of flowers, memorials maybe made to the Scared Heart Cultural Center, 1301 Greene Street, Augusta, GA 30901. A private service will be held by the family. Posey Funeral Directors of North Augusta is in charge of arrangements.
