Newt was a great childhood friend all the way through high school. We played football and basketball from the 7th grade until high school. He got his nickname on the practice field from coach Jimmy Campbell. He was playing defensive end and after a play coach hollered that he came across the line of scrimmage like a big turkey . Needless to say the rest of us picked up on it and began calling him Turkey.
Newt gave up football his junior year to concentrate on his true love basketball . This helped him become the dominate player in this part of the state his senior year and got him many college offers. It was a pleasure to play with him as he led our team.
As good an athlete as he was he was a better person and friend. He always has a big smile on his face no matter what he was doing.
I truly am sorry to hear of his passing. My best to Betty and the family in this sad time.
