James Hawk Obituary

Dr. James M. Hawk
Edgefield - Dr. James Marion Hawk of Edgefield, SC died on Friday, May 21, 2021.
A graveside service will be held at Pineview Memorial Garden in North Augusta, SC at 11:30 AM on Friday, May 28, 2021.
Dr. Hawk was born in Springfield, GA on October 14, 1924, the second of three sons of John W. and Mary Elizabeth ("Maree") Hawk. Dr. Hawk graduated from Effingham Academy at 16 and attended Georgia Military Institute for one year before joining the U.S. Army in 1942 at 17. He rose to the rank of Sergeant in the U.S. Army in the European Theater of World War II. He was a survivor of the Battle of the Bulge and earned a Purple Heart for wounds suffered in France. When the war ended, SGT Hawk served as part of the occupation force in Yugoslavia.
Dr. Hawk returned to the US and enrolled at the University of Georgia, where he joined Alpha Psi. He graduated from Georgia Veterinary School in 1952, earning a Doctorate in Veterinary Medicine.
Dr. Hawk met Becky Tigert at a rabies clinic in 1953 in Beaufort, SC. Becky brought her sister's cat for a shot. Becky hated her sister's cat, but liked my dad, the handsome young veterinarian. They married on December 23, 1953 in Savannah.
Dr. Hawk's Animal Hospital was established in North Augusta, SC a few years later. Dr. and Mrs. Hawk raised their family in North Augusta and, as of 1972, Edgefield, SC.
Dr. Hawk was a former president of the North Augusta Chamber of Commerce. He was a long-time volunteer at the Edgefield Memorial Hospital. He was the greatest Georgia Bulldog fan ever.
Dr. Hawk was preceded in death by his wife of 53 years, Rebecca Tigert Hawk, and two brothers, John William, and Irving. He is survived by daughter Jane Hawk McCabe, married to James of Clemson, SC, as well as grandchildren Tennent McCabe and Lee McCabe. He is survived by a son, Samuel Hawk of Dallas, TX, and his late-in-life partner, June Covar of Edgefield, SC.
Memorials may be sent to the Episcopal Church of the Ridge.

Dr. Hawk will be very much misses. I knew him as a wonderful Veterinarian, and through my daughter, Cindy who was his assistant for years. He and Mrs. Hawk were very special people.
