James Edwin Bodie, Sr.
AIKEN - James Edwin Bodie, Sr., 96, beloved husband of the late Idella Fallaw Bodie, passed away Christmas morning at Benton House.
A native of Batesburg, SC, Jim was a son of the late Eugene Stokes Bodie and Myra Steadman Bodie Kennerly.
Jim served in the China-Burma-India Theater in the Fourteenth Air Force during World War II. Service honors include the Distinguished Unit Citation with 308th Heavy Bombardment Group, the "Liberators of China" battle star on the Asiatic-Pacific ribbon and Air Force Medal.
Jim was a graduate of the University of South Carolina with a bachelor's degree in civil engineering. He was Columbia's first Smoke Control Engineer. He was employed by DuPont Construction at the Savannah River Plant in September 1951 and transferred to Operations in 1954 where he served in various management positions until retirement in December of 1987.
Jim was a long-time member of St. John's United Methodist Church where he formerly served as chairman of the Administrative Board and on various committees and commissions.
He worked with the Boy Scouts of America, member of Jr. Chamber of Commerce, American Red Cross Board and worked with Habitat for Humanity.
Survivors include three children, Susanne and Bob Rhoden, Aiken, John and Frankie Bodie, Lake Murray, Beth and Walter Eubanks, Augusta. He was "Daddy Jim" to 12 grandchildren, Russ and Jennifer Bodie, Mary Leslie and John Whitehead, Jason and Hannah Bodie, Jimmy Rhoden, Charles and Kristy Eubanks, Daniel and Lauren Eubanks, Sarah and Jason Pociask, Tricia Eubanks, Michael and Brooks Eubanks, Brad and Ashley Dennis, Courie and Aimee Dennis, Joseph Dennis and 23 great-grandchildren. In addition to his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by his son, Edwin Bodie; daughter-in-law, Brenda Bodie; brother, John Russell Bodie; cherished sister, Elizabeth "Teany" Bodie Green.
A memorial service will be held Tuesday morning, January 3rd at 11 o'clock at St. John's United Methodist Church with The Revs. Dr. W. Timothy McClendon and Grayson "Butch" Blackwell officiating. A reception will follow the service in Ward Hall.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be directed to St. John's United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 809, Aiken, SC 29809.
