Isabel Vandervelde Obituary

Isabel Ann Reichert
Vandervelde
IRMO, SC - Isabel Ann
Reichert Vandervelde, native of Ethan, South Dakota, and 60 year resident of Aiken, South Carolina, passed peacefully away in her sleep into the next life on March 27, 2015. Isabel, an alumni of USC with a Bachelor's in Creative Writing and a Master's Degree in Theater Arts, graduated Summa Cum Laude.
Isabel was an impassioned, dedicated, and accomplished researcher and writer of history with an innovative and eye-opening focus on the founding of Aiken County, "Aiken County- the Only SC County Founded during Reconstruction." Her writing career began when her first short story was published in "Alfred Hitchcock Mystery Magazine." She used her intricate, accurate, research knowledge to create engaging works of historical fiction as well. Her first novel was "Lace" which paid her way to graduate school. Her novel "Hot Waste" featured many well-known local residents of Aiken and is a must read. In all, Isabel wrote more than 15 books.
Isabel was also active in local theater productions. Most noteworthy is a play she wrote and directed called "1776" celebrating our countries bicentennial. Her acting, stage design, costume and directing talents helped create the Aiken Community Playhouse and the quality cultural blessing that it is today.
Isabel was also a profoundly productive and inspirational artist and art instructor. She personally inspired creativity at Aiken Day School, Mead Hall Elementary, and Saint Angela's Academy as an art teacher for over a decade.
As an accomplished artist, her love for the charm of Aiken inspired a great number of paintings, especially those that portrayed Aiken's unrivaled lineage as an equestrian winter colony. Her love and respect also resulted in her draping Aiken's alleyways and schools with murals that still speak to passers-by today.
She is preceded in death by her husband of 60 years, Vance D. Vandervelde and son,
Timothy G. Vandervelde.
A celebration of the profound creative energy with which she lived life will be held in a few weeks. Please refer to Facebook page of her son, Greg Vandervelde for further notice.
Surviving are her children: Martin A. Vandervelde, Steve B. Vandervelde, Rose C. Dickerson (Pat), Paul D. Vandervelde (Vicki), John E. Vandervelde and Greg Vandervelde (Pamela); grandchildren: Jack Kirven, Sanna K. Cowie (Chris), Matthew McAllister, Ea Schwarz (Michael), Chrisltyn McAllister (Erik), Nathaniel Dickson, Dorothy "Annie" Dickson Vandervelde, Robert McAllister, Amelia Rose McAllister, Frances L. Dickson Vandervelde, John Allen McAllister; and four great-grandchildren: Harrison Norman, Bridget Shealey, Amelia Schwarz, and Diana Schwarz.
We are so thankful for her life.

I didn't know this lady but around 19 years ago, I used to follow her channel on Youtube. I had a crush on Lucius Malfoy / Jason Isaacs and she posted so many videos about him. Once in a while when I get nostalgic, I watch some old Lucius' videos and hers have been in my "favorites" playlist ever since 2006. I knew already back then she was of advanced age and sometimes these last years, I have wondered if she was still around us. Today I did some digging and found this website where I read she passed away years ago. I will always remember her as the Malfoy Grandma!

Isabel and I worked together on the Board at Rose Hill Art Center and took printmaking classes together. I also saw her in a number of Aiken Community Playhouse productions. She was a woman of remarkable talent, and she gave generously of her abilities and her time to the Aiken art community. The theater and arts scene in Aiken would not be what it is today, if not for her hard work and influence. And these are only a small part of the enormous legacy she leaves. My heart goes out to the Vandervelde family.

Dear Vandervelde Family,

Please except my heart felt condolences due to the loss of your Mother/Grandmother. Isabel was always a delight to spend time with. Listening to her wealth of knowledge about the history of Aiken and just history in general was amazing and her paintings are a true treasure of beauty. You are all in my thoughts and prayers.
