Harold Hooks Obituary

Harold Hooks, Sr.
North Augusta - Mr. Harold LeVaughn Hooks Sr., 87, loving husband of Roberta "Bobbie" Mathis Hooks, passed away peacefully at his home on Friday, June 29, 2018. Funeral Services will be conducted Tuesday morning at 11 o'clock from Grace United Methodist Church. Rev. James D. Dennis, Jr. officiating. Interment will follow in Westover Memorial Park with Full Military Honors.
Born the first child in a large farm family near Millen, Georgia to the late Allen Andrew Hooks and Nettie Williams Hooks, Harold graduated from Jenkins County High School and later attended Augusta College. Among the very early employees at the Savannah River Plant, he spent his entire career of 41 years there, working for DuPont and later Westinghouse. Harold heeded his nation's call for the Korean War, joining the United States Marine Corps, and served in Korea for two years. He loved the Marines, and continued his service in the Marine Reserves for 39 years, rising to the rank of Chief Warrant Officer 4 and finally Commanding Officer of the Augusta USMC Reserve Unit, formerly based behind Daniel Village. He served his community for a number of years as an elected Justice of the Peace, and happily presided at the marriage of hundreds of couples, sometimes in his family's living room. Harold was a member of the Scottish Rite Center of Augusta and attended Grace United Methodist Church.
Survivors include his wife of 43 years, Roberta "Bobbie" Hooks; four sons, Vaughn Hooks (Joyce) of Hinsdale, IL, Kevin Wells of Augusta, Georgia, Michael Wells (Holly) of Atlanta, Georgia, and Bryan Wells (Beth) of Cumming, Georgia; six grandchildren Matthew Hooks, Spencer Hooks, Whitney Wells, Cecilia Wells, Hamilton Wells and Jay Wells; a brother, Robert H. Hooks (Brenda); two sisters, Jeannette Hooks Weathersby (Horace, dec.) and Carolyn Hooks Smith (Dwight).
The family will receive friends at the funeral home Monday evening from 5 until 7.

This is how I Remember Chief Hooks: As a Leader of Men who looked out for his own.

Michael Hogue

"Chief" was my boss during the Marine Corps & I really liked him. A great man who took me under his wing & aided a lot of folks. I was truly sorry to hear he had to go & guard the Streets of Heaven, but I'm glad he is there. I've included a photo of him while in the field over in California, for *that* is how I remember him: strong, giving orders, and protecting his men from . .. well, everything he could.
Give my love to all the family as he was a great leader to many, and as a military man, I know how it feels & can be.

Bobbie and family:
Please accept our sincere regret over the loss of Harold. My acquaintance with him began in the Marine Reserve Unit in 1961 and continued through the years. He was an honorable man with deep devotion to our Country. We need more men like him. Jim Blanchard
