Frank Thelen Obituary

Frank Thelen
April 9, 1934 - October 21, 2012
Resident of El Sobrante
Frank Thelen passed peacefully in his home after a long battle with cancer. He was preceded in death by his wife, Theone Banks Thelen, in 1987. He is survived by his 3 children: Carla Thelen Mendelson, Mark Thelen, and Catherine Thelen Dooley; by his 2 son-in-laws: Skip Mendelson and Dan Dooley; and by his 5 grandchildren: Mackensie Mendelson, Allie Rae Mendelson, Riley Mendelson, Brianna Dooley and Nicky Dooley.
Frank, an Albany CA native, graduated from St. Mary's High School in Berkeley, and University of San Francisco. Frank served in the US Army, then returned home to work in his grandfather's slaughterhouse, McDermott Meat Company in Berkeley. He was a principal in that business until its closure in 1983. He went to work for Armour Meat Company in Dixon, then got a teaching credential and taught in the culinary arts program at Contra Costa College for 16 years.
After retirement, he spent time with his children, grandchildren and his many friends. Frank's home was always open to stop in for a visit. His friendly company, sound advice, and good humor will be missed by all who knew him.
Visitation will take place on Friday, 10/26 from 4-8pm, with a rosary at 7:00pm. Funeral service will be Saturday 10/27 at 10:30am. Visitation and funeral will be held at Holy Angels/St. Joseph's Cemetery.

I met Frank several years ago on a cruise to Mexico. What a wonderful gentlemen I had a previlege to to get to know. Over the years we kept in touch and have seen him in Las Vegas and his home town. Just last year in Sept. I was in San Francisco on a cruise, he was so gracious to meet me and and take me to a wonderful restaurant for lunch. He will be missed!
Rest in peace Frank!
To Frank's family, my deepest condolences. May your hearts soon be filled with wonderful memories of joyful times together as you celebrate a life well lived.

I have a lot of great memories growing up across the street from the Thelen family. Frank taught me how to water ski, or at least be dragged behind a boat. The Thelens had the coolest garage ever, with a couch and a boat in it! And our dads always played show and tell with their latest man-toys, barbecues and motorcycles they bought. Carla, Mark and Catherine...God Bless your families, Flo(rain)

I met Frank a few times. Knowing him through his son Mark , as they would talk multiple times a day and Mark shared many of the great stories. Frank's service was beautiful. I know what a remarkable man he was. Easy to see how Mark and his dad were best friends ..

Mark and Family,

The greatest gift our parents can give us is the gift of a life full of lessons learned. This creates the character and shapes us to be the best we can possibly be. Although our lives inevitably has an ending. The lessons we have learned from our parents are limitless. Having had the pleasure to shared your father through the many conversations is a validation of how rich he has made your life. We are so very greatful to have have enjoyed Frank through you. His passion for life and living will always be a part of the lessons you pass on to your many friends.

All our best, we love you.
