MONTMORENCI - Elspye Lee Byars Johnson, 83, died Monday February 12, 2024, at home. She was born December 6, 1940, in Wagener, SC, the second child of seven to the late John Bernell Byars and Elsie Inez Youngblood Byars. She was predeceased by her husband of almost 53 years, her childhood sweetheart Cyril Cullen Johnson. She was a member of Millbrook Baptist Church, and previously a member of First Baptist Church of Montmorenci, South Aiken Baptist Church, and Windsor Baptist Church. She graduated from Aiken High School and followed that with an associate degree from Southern Methodist College. She worked as a bookkeeper at Satcher Motor Company before being appointed the postmaster at Montmorenci, a post she held for 34 years. She enjoyed family history, collecting community history, teaching Sunday school, crocheting, and reading. She and Cyril were charter members of the Aiken-Barnwell Genealogy Society.
She is survived by her daughter Cynthia "Cindy" J. George (Jerry A.), son Cyril Kevin Johnson (Donna Ivey) five grandchildren Emalie Johnson Howle (Adam T.). Cullen Kevin Johnson (Stephanie Klarman), Ryan Perry George, Aaron Samuel George, and Marjorie Elspye George siblings Myra B. Ridgeway (Brooke) and John Edward Byars (Karen) three great grandchildren and a number of nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends on Thursday, February 15, 2024, from five to seven p.m. at Folk Funeral Home in Williston, SC. A graveside service will be held at eleven a.m., Friday, February 16, 2024, at Mt. Beulah Baptist Church Cemetery, Windsor, SC with the Reverends Bill Howard and Keith Ussery officiating.
