EDWARD BALLOFF Obituary

BALLOFF, EDWARD - a lifelong resident of Campbell County, passed away peacefully Saturday morning, June 7, 2014 at the University of Tennessee Medical Center. He was born April 2, 1920, in LaFollette, TN. He graduated from The McCallie School in Chattanooga in 1937 and Vanderbilt University in 1941. After enlisting in the United States Naval Reserve in 1940, he served his country in both the Atlantic and Pacific Theaters as a Lieutenant during World War II. After the war, he resumed his education at Vanderbilt University School of Law and received a Doctor of Jurisprudence in 1947. Shortly after, Ed returned to LaFollette to join his father and brother, Sam, in the family business, Balloff's Department Stores. They ran the stores in LaFollette, Oak Ridge and Knoxville until their closures by 1988. After retiring from the retail clothing business at age 68, Ed practiced domestic law at Basista, Balloff, Scott and Pollard in Jacksboro, TN, for twenty-six years. He was a member of Heska Amuna Synagogue in Knoxville. Ed was also a civic leader in Campbell County, serving on many boards and organizations: Treasurer of the Campbell County Bar Association; Board member and Past Chairman of Peoples National Bank, which is now Peoples Bank of the South, from 1960 to the present; Board member and Past Chairman of LaFollette Utilities; charter member of LaFollette Community Hospital; and Board member of Knoxville Central YMCA; and Past President of LaFollette County Club. Ed was awarded an Alumni Achievement Award by the McCallie School, and he was honored by the Great Smoky Council of Boy Scouts of America and the LaFollette Chamber of Commerce. In 1984, he was awarded an Honorary Doctor of Humane Letters from the University of the Cumberlands (formerly Cumberland College), Williamsburg, KY. Ed was an avid golfer, photographer, railroad enthusiast, an story teller. He was a loyal supporter of Big Orange Basketball, especially during the Ray Mears era. Ed or "Mr. B.", as he was affectionately known in the legal community in Campbell County, was a practicing lawyer until his final days. Except for going to school and to the military, he never left LaFollette, a place he dearly loved. Ed was preceded in death by his parents, Louis and Esther Balloff; and beloved wife of 57 years, Janet. He is survived and will be deeply missed by his daughters and sons-in-law, Barbara and Hap Heilman and Carol and Steve Abeles; grandchildren, Apple Martine, Zachary Heilman, Adam Abeles and wife, Christina Bailly, and Emily Abeles; great-grandson, Silas Lashley; brother, Sam Balloff and sister Eve Marigolies; and many counsins, nieces and nephews. The family would like to thank the doctors, nurses and staff of U.T. Medical Center for their extraordinary caregiving. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be sent to the University of the Cumberlands, 6191 College Station Drive, Williamsburg, KY 40769. Funeral service 11:30 AM Tuesday at Rose Mortuary Mann Heritage Chapel with Rabbi Alon Ferency officiating. Interment will follow at New Jewish Cemetery. I wish the entire Balloff family my sincerest sympathies. Ed and Sam were responsible for looking out for my father who grew up in Oak Ridge after my grandfather passed away. They took a fatherless child and showed him love and attention. I am forever grateful for their kindness. My dad never forgot that and always spoke of Ed as the person he learned the most from about work and life. He will be missed. Thank you and God bless Mr. Balloff.

Ed was a devoted Tennessee basketball fan. I was in the media and he attended every post-game news conference during the DeVoe years. He wasn't an arrogant, pompous fan, just solid person who was in your corner win or lose. He made a positive difference. His impact on LaFollette was significant.

"And I will give you the treasures of darkness, and hidden wealth of secret places, in order that you may know that it is I, The Lord, the God of Israel, who calls you by your name". Isaiah 45:3. Mr. B definitely walked in the light, leaving a legacy of how to treat others and how to leave the world better than you found it. He was the perfect example of everything that is good, kind, and right in the world. His Friendship was certainly "a Treasure" in my life. I will deeply miss this cherished friend. Scarlett
