Earl McFerrin Obituary

Earl "Mac" McFerrin
CONCORD, N.C. - Mac passed from this life at Tucker Hospice House on October 16, 2023 after a courageous battle with multiple Glioblastoma (GMB) wild type Grade 4 tumors. His diagnosis was a shock, but his desire to not give up lasted up to his final hours. He lived every day with courage and a tenacious love of his family, friends and life.
Born on May 16, 1952 in Greenwood, SC, Mac was the eldest child of Cecil J. McFerrin and Mary Bradley McFerrin.
Mac is survived by his loving and devoted wife Susan (Sue) McFerrin and his much loved kitty, Riley. Mac is also survived by his sister Holly Huber (Crist) of Dawsonville, GA, nephew Michael Huber of John's Creek, GA, and niece Morgan Huber (fiance Barrett) of Cumming, GA. Even though his family was limited in size, he also loved his cousins dearly. Mary Jean Huntley (Sonny) of Hilton Head, SC, Margaret Young (John) of Barnwell, SC, and Pat Browne (Kris) of Greensboro, NC were a great source of childhood memories, love, laughter, and outstanding fun at The farm.
Mac was graduated from Aiken HS in 1970. His high school life was filled with all the usual school activities, but he also enjoyed band practice, playing the sax in The Intruders, and working after school. Even as a teenager he had a strong work ethic. It's hard to believe, but Mac drove a school bus to/from school for elementary & junior high school students. Remarkably, he never wrecked the bus! Many of Mac's buddies from high school still gather a couple times a year at Edisto Island, SC for great fishing trips, telling of tales, and raucous old men fun. He will be missed.
After a stint in the Navy, Mac and Sue moved to Columbia, SC. He completed his BA in Business Administration at the University of SC. Mac was an avid Gamecock fan - always cheering on men's and women's sports equally. An eventual transfer to the Charlotte region brought us to our home in Concord, NC. Mac's professional life was centered in foodservice sales. He worked for Hunt? Wesson, Borden, Kraft foods, and Mondelez Intl. To Mac, an important aspect of his work ethic was establishing and maintaining close personal and professional relationships with his customers. Earning respect and trust from his customers were a top priority. While Mac was a successful salesman and won many awards/accolades, maintaining solid friendships with his co-workers was of higher value. These folks were like family to him.
We would like to thank so many people who helped guide our lives in the last month. Thank you is such an inadequate word for your love, knowledge, and time spent with us during tough times. Our hospice nurse Tiffany was so very kind and always offered sound advice. Tucker Hospice House nurse Penni was the essence of compassion and comfort in Mac's last hours. Our CNA crew of Terrance Grier, Valerie Jordan, Angie Hamilton, and Kim Jelks were the angels on earth who made our lives easier. We often referred to them as our A team and they are outstanding professionals. So many others offered hugs, advice, or were placed in our path at the exact right time. We know God is in control - we have only to trust His plan.
Mac and Sue have several organizations near and dear to their hearts. Because of Mac's situation, we ask, if you are able, to donate to Make-A-Wish (Central & Western NC) 217 E. Tremont Ave. Charlotte, NC 28203. Please note in the memo line Mac McFerrin/Glioblastoma. Unfortunately, GMB affects children too often. A little joy in a child's life would be such a blessing. At a later date, we will gather at Edisto Island, SC to say a few words and recount a life well lived and a man well loved.
