Denise Frye
GASTONIA, NC - Frances Denise "Nisie" Deibler Frye of Gastonia, NC died Saturday, February 14, 2015 following a brief illness. She was born on September 29, 1953 in Southern Pines, NC, and was the daughter of Dr. E.C. Deibler of Pinehurst, NC and the late Mary Smith Deibler.
In addition to her father, Nisie is survived by her husband of 38 years, the Rev. Dr. John L. Frye, Jr.; her son, John L. Frye, III, his wife Megan, and their daughter, Fiona of Arlington, VA; her sister and brother-in-law, Valerie Stancik and the Rev. Glen Stancik of Pinehurst, NC; and her sisters-in-law and their husbands, Martha Frye Baker and Tom Baker, and Mary Frye Erwin and John Erwin. She is also survived by many loving nieces and nephews.
Nisie was a graduate of Sanford Central High School and North Carolina State University, class of 1975, with a degree in Mathematics. She was the first NCSU coed to serve as head cheerleader in the school's history. She delighted especially in the 1974 NCAA basketball national championship and the bowl games in which the Wolfpack competed during her tenure. As a young girl, she excelled as an equestrienne, winning many competitions. She was chosen Miss Sanford, representing her community in the Miss North Carolina Pageant, excelling as a dancer. She was an avid fan of the Wolfpack and the Davidson Wildcats. During her working career, she worked with her husband in the John L. Frye Co. in Robbins, NC prior to his entry into the ministry. Afterwards she worked in the Media Resources Department at Union Theological Seminary in Richmond, Virginia during her husband's matriculation, serving as interim director of the department during his final year. Once her husband graduated, they moved to Columbia, SC and Eastminster Presbyterian Church where she served as Treasurer for 10 years. While living in Aiken, SC, she served as bookkeeper for Shellhouse-Rivers Funeral Home. When she moved to Gastonia, she worked as a bookkeeper with Beverly Knits.
A woman of deep faith, Nisie has served the church as Moderator of Presbyterian Women at Elise Presbyterian Church in Robbins, NC as well as a Stephen Minister.
Family and friends of Mrs. Frye are invited to attend her visitation which will begin at 5:00 PM until 8:00 PM Wednesday in the Fellowship Hall of the First Presbyterian Church of Gastonia. A service to celebrate her life will be held at 2:00 PM Thursday in the sanctuary of the First Presbyterian Church of Gastonia with the Rev. Lauren Sease Vanacore, Pastor John H. Stanley, and the Rev. Glen Stancik officiating. A private committal will take place prior to the service.
Honorary Pallbearers will be the staff and officers of the First Presbyterian Church of Gastonia.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial contributions be directed to the First Presbyterian Church of Gastonia, 1621 E. Garrison Blvd., Gastonia, NC 28054, Eastminster Presbyterian Church, 3200 Trenholm Rd, Columbia, SC 29204, South Aiken Presbyterian Church, 1711 Whiskey Rd., Aiken, SC 29803, The NC State Alumni Association, Campus Box 7503, NC State University, Raleigh, NC 27695-7503 or the Davidson Athletic Foundation, Davidson College, P.O. Box 7174, Davidson, NC 28035-7174.
The family is especially grateful to the wonderful doctors and nurses of Caromont Health and CMC, who labored valiantly in their efforts to preserve Nisie's life, and to the congregation of the First Presbyterian Church of Gastonia for their extraordinarily compassionate care.
