David Hathaway Obituary

David Hathaway
MILLBROOK, NY - David Robert Hathaway of Millbrook, NY, died on July 11, 2018 at age 74 from Alzheimer's disease. He was born in Tarrytown, New York, on April 16, 1944 to Edith and Clemens Hathaway. He attended The Hotchkiss School and received a BA in American Studies from Yale University where he rowed varsity crew.
After undergraduate, he pursued a career in finance, beginning as an investment analyst for Morgan Guaranty. He eventually dedicated his efforts to venture capital and became a managing general partner of Venrock Associates, where he led investments in a variety of information technology companies over the course of a twenty-year career.
David married Nancy Clark Needham on June 9, 1973. They had two sons and moved from New York City to Millbrook, New York, where they have lived for the last thirty years. He also enjoyed a winter home in Aiken, South Carolina.
David was an avid golfer, skier, and rider. He particularly enjoyed the thrill and beauty of fox hunting, serving as a Joint Master of the Millbrook Hunt, and loved going for long walks on the farm with his golden retrievers.
After retiring from Venrock, David became a board member of the US-Russia Investment Fund, a director of the Bank of Millbrook, and an advisor to the Hitchcock Woods Foundation. He was active in philanthropy with a particular focus on conservation efforts, animal protection, and education.
David is survived by his wife, Nancy, his brother John, two sons, David Bradley and Christopher, and two grandchildren. In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to the Dutchess Land Conservancy or the Hitchcock Woods Foundation. A celebration of his life will be held at his home in Millbrook on Saturday, September 29, 2018. Arrangements have been entrusted to Allen Funeral Home, Millbrook, N.
