Dale D. Hughes
Aiken - DALE D. HUGHES, 96, passed away peacefully and of natural causes on Saturday, April 10, 2021, at his residence in Aiken, SC, where he moved from Monroeville, PA, in 2018.
A native of Moline, IL, Dale was predeceased by his wife of 62 years, Barbara Rydberg Hughes, parents Corbin and Inez Kirschbaum Hughes, stepmother Dorothy Bucy Hughes, and brother Harold Hughes. He was a graduate of Augustana College in Rock Island, IL and attended graduate school at the University of Illinois. Dale was a veteran of the United States Army during World War II, serving in the China Burma India Theater. Dale began his career as an accountant with U.S. Steel in 1950 at Gary Sheet and Tin. He transferred to Pittsburgh, PA in 1960, working at headquarters and various steel mills until retiring in 1985 as Assistant to the Vice President of Accounting. After retirement, he did consulting work, traveling to such countries as Russia, Venezuela, Turkey, and Thailand, facilitating the installation of cost accounting systems at those locations.
He was very active in the Boy Scouts of America with the Allegheny B.S.A. Council and was awarded the Silver Beaver. He was a member of several bowling leagues, once scoring that coveted perfect game, a 300. He supported his family by attending events that were important to them. He enjoyed volunteering at Meals on Wheels, watching ALL Steelers games, and playing ANY card game.
Like himself, Dale wanted all of us to be our best selves by becoming educated, hard-working, generous, and independent. He encouraged and provided his family the opportunity of a college education as he found it to be a most valuable asset and one in which they could reach their goals. He was our personal financial advisor, our mentor, and our friend. He was known for his friendly disposition and quick-witted sense of humor but NOT for his skills of operating a car in reverse.
Surviving are his five children, Dale Hughes, Jr., Woodstock, NY, Janice Hughes, Aiken, SC, Judy Howley, Monroeville, PA, Joan Lioi, Aiken, SC, Jennifer Prusacki (Stan), Collegeville, PA; six grandchildren, Brian Howley, Sara Lioi (Alex), Erin Loesley (Bart), Joshua Lioi, Lauren Prusacki, Rachel Prusacki; three great-grandchildren Calvin, Will, and Kay Loesley.
A funeral service will be held at a later date in Illinois, where he will be interred at the Rock Island National Cemetery.
