Carol Baxter Sherburne
AIKEN - Carol Baxter Sherburne, age 57 and a lifelong resident of Aiken, SC, passed away on October 13, 2018 at Augusta University Hospital with her family by her side. Throughout her 3-year battle with ovarian cancer, she showed incredible courage, dignity, and grace, refusing to allow her life to be defined by her illness. She maintained her upbeat attitude and a full family life throughout. She will be greatly missed by those whose lives she touched.
Born February 4, 1961, Carol was the daughter of Charlotte Baxter and the late Richard Baxter. Carol graduated from St. Angela Academy in 1979 and enrolled at the Georgia Institute of Technology, earning a B.S. in Chemical Engineering in 1984. She went on to have a successful career as an engineer and manager at the Savannah River Site. Upon the birth of her first child, she embraced the role of full-time mother and, later, of teacher at St. Mary Help of Christians School. When her children reached college age, she returned to employment at the Savannah River Site.
She is survived by her husband, David Sherburne; her children, Claire Sherburne of Atlanta, GA, Andrew Sherburne of Arlington, VA, and Eric Sherburne of Nashville, TN; her mother, Charlotte Baxter; her sisters, Pixie Baxter, Sandy (Robert) Lemmon, and Sharon Baxter; and her brother, Roger Baxter.
Carol will be remembered as a selfless and devoted wife, mother, daughter, sister, coworker, and friend. Family, friends, and all others whose lives Carol touched are invited to drop in between the hours of 5:30 and 7:30 pm on Friday, October 19 at the Aiken County Historical Museum to celebrate her life and share fond memories. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to Equine Rescue of Aiken or the Ovarian Cancer Research Alliance.
