Benjamin Bancroft Obituary

Benjamin (Ben) Bancroft
AIKEN, SC - Benjamin (Ben) Bancroft of Aiken died Saturday, July 5, 2014.
A Memorial Service celebrating his life will be held at 4pm Wednesday, July 9, 2014 at Shellhouse Rivers Funeral Home, 715 East Pine Log Road, Aiken, SC with Rev. Davis Barton officiating. Interment will be private. Visitation with family will be one hour before the service.
Ben was the son of the late John Nields and Elizabeth Gray Bancroft. He is survived by his brother John Bancroft (Beth), Aiken. He is also survived by Cousins Bill Bancroft and Alice Bancroft Fjelstul (Dean); nieces Julianne Bancroft Cheek, Lauren Howard, and Rachel Hanisee and nephew Nash Johnston. Ben was predeceased by his wife Linda Golden Bancroft and his identical twin brother Edward (Ned).
He was born on June 21, 1946 in Bryn Mawr, PA and grew up in Aiken. He was a graduate of Aiken High School and the University Of Georgia School Of Journalism.
Ben worked in the circulation department of The Augusta Chronicle until his retirement. He was a US Army veteran who served one tour of duty in Vietnam.
Crossword puzzles and golf were two of his favorite pastimes. However, nothing surpassed his love of life and most especially his love for family and those whose friendships made him feel so especially honored. These included his golfing friends, as well as, classmates and others who maintained their close relationship with him throughout his life.
Ben was blessed to have Christian friends who ministered to him as he dealt with his recent illness. It was during this time that Ben came to know the love of Jesus. He accepted Christ as his Savior and was baptized three days before his death.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the Savannah River Cancer Foundation, PO Box 3694, Aiken, SC 29802.

Ben and Ned were a delight to be around. They could always keep a smile on your face. But, it was a pleasure knowing the entire family. You were all very nice to me and I have always remembered it.

John and Beth, I am sorry for your lost Ben. I knew Ned and Ben in high school (class of 64). I was glad to be able to get reacquainted with Ben at some of the class lunches. John, I will keep you and Beth in my prayers. David Moseley

Ben and Ned. The Heckle and Jeckle of the class of 64. Always funny and fun to be around. Many great memories of our youth in Aiken. You will be missed.

I remember Ben in Aiken - he and his twin, Ned. I am very pleased that he accepted Christ at the last moment - never too late. I am sure he is having a great time in heaven and would not want to come back to earth. I extend my condolences to John and Beth. I would bet anything Beth had a wonderful influence on Ben.

Whenever we talked on the phone, my cousin Ben always said, "I love you." I loved him, too, and will miss him terribly.

Well, Ben, we're surely going to miss you. But please know that in your own special way, you and Ned made this world a way cooler and much happier place. Sister Alice and I had so many wonderful times with you, Ned, John and your parents those many years ago, and you gave us countless wonderful memories that we've had and will have forever. And although not nearly as good as me at Cowboys & Indians 60+ years ago, but at least you guys showed up, and you tried. And you guys, and surely John, were very special. I couldn't have asked for better cousins than the 3 of you. I'll see you on down the road.
