Barbara Rollins Obituary

Rev. Dr. Barbara Jean Rollins
NORTH AUGUSTA - Rev. Dr. Barbara Jean Rollins passed away on April 26, 2018. She was born in Williamsport, Pennsylvania on July 3, 1938 to George Harry Bowen and Emma Jean Bowen and grew up in Versailles, Kentucky.
Barbara lived a very full life with three careers. She was a first grade teacher in the South Carolina school system for 10 years. She was a United Methodist minister for 15 years, trailblazing that career for other women as the seventh woman ordained in the South Carolina Conference. And she ended the last ten years of her working life as a Social Worker who advocated for disabled children in the Lower Savannah District. She earned three Masters degrees, as well as a Doctorate of Ministry.
Barbara loved to explore and learn, and those qualities carried her throughout her life to discover and understand the world around her. They were also a very important part of her faith practice. She taught her children to believe in a loving God and encouraged them to have an intimate relationship with the God they understood.
Barbara was also an accomplished artist and poet. She loved painting water colors and published poems on the internet under various pseudonyms.
Barbara traveled to many places, most of which were late in her life. Her favorite country was Peru, and she even climbed ruins there in her sixties.
Barbara never let those who were important to her doubt how much they meant to her. Holidays, particularly Christmas, were her favorite times of the year, and she loved to share with others at those times.
She is survived by her three children, Jean Laurie Fowler and husband, Michael; Deborah Lynn Rollins; David Jonathan Rollins and wife, Linda "Cindy; her two grandchildren, Ashleigh Diane Tuggle and husband Dusty, and Carlos Adam Castaneda, and her three great grandchildren, Cameron Lee Tuggle, Brooklynn Paige Tuggle, and Brionna Erinn Castaneda; as well as her brother and his wife, Ronald and Becky Bowen of Chillicothe, Ohio.
A memorial service will be held in Barbara Jean Rollins' honor on Saturday, May 19, 2018 at 3:30 pm at the Saint John's United Methodist Church, 104 Newberry St., NW, Aiken, SC 29801. In lieu of flowers, she asked that donations be made to www.heartofthehealer.org.

Barbara was a dear friend in Westminster, and we were happy to see her occasionally when she moved close to us--we are in Aiken. Hope all is well with you three and your families. Pretty sure you miss her, and am pretty sure she is looking forward to seeing you again.

Our family first met Dr. Rollins when she pastored our church in Westminster, SC in the early 1980's. She was our first experience with a lady minister and she fulfilled all our needs and hopes with excellence. When we left that church due to a career move, we lost track of Barbara and her family, regaining our acquaintance with Barbara when she was pastoring a United Methodist Church in one of the communities in what we in Aiken respectfully refer to as "the Valley." My family's wishes for Dr. Rollins' family, Laurie, Debbie, and David and their families is for the peace Dr. Rollins would undoubtedly have them have during this time of their lives. Dr. Rollins' life was a blessing to many. We hope her passing was peaceful.

With our respect and love,

I remember Barbara as my minister. She married me along with another Methodist minister. Beautiful memories. I hope her family finds peace with her passing.
