Augustus Bazin Obituary

Augustus "Gus" Thomas Bazin passed away on April 6, 2014. Loved and appreciated by many for his robust, contagious personality, Gus is survived by his wife, Cindy, and his five children: Christopher (Patti), Mark (Danni), Gregory (Joy), Sabrina (Liz), and Aimée. He is also survived by his mother, Cina Famularo; his sisters Gayle (Leon), Cindy (Ernie) and Jill and their families; as well as his step-children Autumn and Gabriel and Gabriel's children, Victoria and Misty, who he considered as his own. Born September 3, 1941, in New Orleans, Gus considered life to be a continuous adventure, whether it was reveling in quality time with his family or relishing his many outdoor interests like duck hunting, boating, trail riding, or rolling out his Harley Davidson on the open road in full black-leather regalia. He often spent hours strolling on his ranch in Folsom, appreciating the flowers, birds, and critters. He spoiled his dogs with treats, and he groomed his horse daily. He beamed with pride for his family's accomplishments, small and great, personal and professional. In his eyes, each one had achieved top-level success at whatever task he or she had undertaken. Gus graduated from Redemptorist High School in New Orleans, Northwestern State University in Natchitoches, and received a Master of Education with honors from Boston University. Later, he built a career for himself and a life for his family as an insurance adjustor in the New Orleans area. He was a born educator, always urging others to learn and investigate a little more about the topic at hand. He taught all of his children, and later, his wife, to swim. He often thought it prudent to understand how a thing worked. He discovered interesting tidbits about most every person he met and left with them a lasting impression and a friendship. Gus threw great parties and cleverly crafted a toast for every occasion. He enjoyed the spotlight but had a tender heart and never wanted quality time with family or good friends to end: "Wait…let me tell you one more thing before you go," he'd say. A veteran of the U.S. Marine Corps and the U.S. Army, Gus took pride in his service and enjoyed traveling around the country as well as his trips abroad to Europe, North Africa, and South America. Gus was an excellent tango and Cajun dancer; he enjoyed music, fine art, reading, and he appreciated a great meal-whether dining out or home cooked-and was renowned for his sweet tooth. Family and friends will celebrate Gus' life at Lake Lawn Metairie Funeral Home, New Orleans, Louisiana on Friday, April 11, 2014. Visitation will be from 10am-12pm followed by a funeral service at 12pm. He will be buried with military honors in the Bazin family plot at Metairie Cemetery. As Gus' barber for many years till he moved to Folsom, I can tell you he was a lot of fun to be around. He was very proud of his service as a marine and always spoke proudly of his family. I was sad to hear of his passing and my sympathy goes out to the Bazin Family.

Uncle Gus treated me like one of his boys. The memory of his kindness and zest for life will always be with me.

Gus and Ray met in Hawaii as young Marines in the 60's. Gus learned that there was someone else in headquarters from the New Orleans area, so he found Ray and introduced himself; woke him up, in fact. Doesn't that sound like Gus? They stayed in touch with each other over the years, enjoying many meals together at the Chinese buffet. The obituary is a beautiful tribute to Gus. He always spoke about his family with much love and affection, and he was so very proud of you all. You are blessed to have so many happy memories that will bring you comfort. Ray is so grateful for last week's visit in Folsom, sitting around laughing, talking, and reminiscing with Gus and Cindy. And for the hospital visit Saturday afternoon when he got to shake his buddy's hand for the last time. Gus was a good man, and we will miss him.

My thoughts and prayers are with Gus' family. I worked with Gus when he was an adjuster in New Orleans and can recall many trips to Cedar Rapids to attend claims conferences with him. Sometimes I got to eat my dessert before he ask me if he could have it.

Deepest sympathies to Gus's family. We all hated it when he retired from UFG since he was usually the life of the party. I got to know him very well when he came to Shreveport and did hail duty. Lots of funny stories which all involved Gus. We will miss him.
