AUDREY BURNETTE Obituary

BURNETTE, AUDREY FAY GRUBB - age 94, of Knoxville, Tennessee, passed away at home on Thursday, May 15, 2014. She was born May 28, 1919. Audrey was a lifelong resident of South Knoxville and a graduate of Young High Class of 1937. She married her high school sweetheart, Conner Burnette, in 1940. While raising three daughters, Audrey was active in PTA, room mothers, Brownies, and Girl Scouts. As a member of New Prospect Presbyterian Church for 74 years, Audrey worked as a Sunday school teacher, a Vacation Bible School leader, a Women's Association officer, and a FISH volunteer. Audrey was well known for her sewing, tailoring, and cooking skills. She also loved gardening, ballroom dancing, reading, and UT football. Audrey's love of hats was evident everywhere she went, especially at church. In later years, she designed and hooked elaborate oriental rugs and wall hangings, winning numerous awards. She was president of Smoky Mountain Rug Hookers Association for many years and treasurer of YHS Class of 1937 reunion committee until the early 2000's. Audrey and Conner traveled extensively in their retirement years: Hawaii, Alaska, Europe, Australia, New Zealand, as well as continental U.S. Audrey was happiest surrounded by her family, sharing a home-cooked meal and one of her famous desserts. She is preceded in death by her parents, Earl and Anne Harmon Grubb; and her brothers, Ross, Raymond, and Lennis Grubb. Audrey is survived by her husband of 74 years, Conner; daughters, Connie Burnette Hilton (Houston), Nikki Burnette (Knoxville), and Sara and son-in-law, Joseph McNamara (Birmingham); granddaughter, Michelle Hilton Fowler and husband, John (Austin); grandsons, Alexander and John Conner McNamara (Birmingham); great grandchildren, Madison and Carson Fowler (Austin); sister, Doris Grubb King; sisters-in-law, Singleton Grubb and Anna Lee Massingill; several nieces and nephews. A memorial service will be held at New Prospect Presbyterian Church, 4920 Prospect Road, Knoxville, on Saturday, May 31, 2014, at 5:00 p.m. with the family receiving friends at 3:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Alzheimer's Tennessee, Inc., 5801 Kingston Pike, Knoxville, TN 37919 or to a charity of your choice.
