Anthony Harris Obituary

Dr. Anthony "Tony" Harris
AIKEN - Dr Anthony Edwin ("Tony") Harris passed away peacefully having lost his brief battle with brain cancer. He was devoted to his family and is survived by his wife Sandra Mayhew Harris; daughters, Elizabeth "Lisa" Harris (Paul) Schunter, Surrey, England, and Michelle Harris (Patrick) Dennis, Columbia, SC; grandchildren, Abigail Elizabeth Schunter, Andrew Harris Schunter, and Anna Margaret Dennis; sister, Cynthia Harris Waymouth; sister in law, Barbara Harris; brother and sister in law, Winston and Diane Mayhew; and numerous cousins, nieces, and nephews. He was preceded in death by his brother, Geoffrey Scott Harris.
Dr. Harris was born on June 1, 1943, in Columbus, Ohio to the late Dr. and Mrs. Lloyd Edwin Harris. He was raised in Rochester, Minnesota where his father was a pediatrician at the Mayo Clinic and who inspired him to become a physician himself. Dr Harris often reminisced about his childhood fishing and canoeing on the lakes of Minnesota, pheasant shooting in South Dakota, and playing football, basketball, ice hockey and golf in high school. Dr. Harris graduated from Denison University in 1964 where he enjoyed being a Phi Delta Theta and then went on to graduate from the Bowman Gray School of Medicine at Wake Forest University in 1969. In that same year, he met his wife Sandy whom he married on July 11, 1970.
After serving his country as a doctor in the United States Airforce, completing his ENT residency program, and teaching academic medicine at the Medical College of Virginia and Johns Hopkins, Dr. Harris settled into private practice in South Carolina and in 1990 made Aiken his permanent home. He enjoyed being a member of Aiken Rotary and Palmetto Golf Club, riding his Harley Davidson and his hobby of creating model railroads. An active member of All Saints Anglican Church, he sang in the choir and was also a member of the Order of the Knights Templar. He loved traveling to Europe with Sandy and spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren Abigail, Anna Margaret and Andrew most often on beach vacations and holidays in England. His life's purpose above all was taking care of his patients which he did to the very end. He lived a full life and will be greatly missed.
A private service will be held at All Saints Anglican Church with the Revered George Alexander officiating. A private interment will be held in the St. Thaddeus Episcopal Church Cemetery.
The family will receive friends from 6:00-8:00 PM Wednesday, June 4, 2025, at SHELLHOUSE FUNERAL HOME, INC., 924 HAYNE AVE., AIKEN SC
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to All Saints Anglican Church, 104 Fairfield St. NE, Aiken, SC 29801, or to the Rotary Club of Aiken, P.O. Box 685, Aiken, SC 29802.

I´m saddened to learn of Dr. Harris´s passing. We were colleagues in the Aiken medical community, and I was briefly a patient years ago. He was a consummate gentleman and a credit to the profession. May our Lord grant His peace to all those who are grieving their loss.
