Andrew Hendrix Obituary

Andrew Hendrix, Jr.
AIKEN, SC - Today we celebrate the life of Andrew Hendrix, Jr. who departed this earthly life on December 31, 2016 at the Agape Hospice House in Lexington, South Carolina. He has found shelter in the arms of our Lord after a long and courageous battle with Alzheimer's disease.
Born January 18, 1932 in Monetta, South Carolina, Andrew was the middle child born to the late Nell and Andrew Hendrix, Sr. Affectionately known as "Buster" to his family and "Andy" to his friends he lived life to the fullest. He joined the United States Air Force in 1951 serving in the Korean War. During that time, he married Johnnie Mae (Jean) Highsmith and they had two daughters, Angela and Pamela. They traveled as a family throughout the United States as he served his country. His last post was in Aiken, South Carolina where the family put down roots.
Andrew retired after 20 years in the service and began a new career as a teacher. After obtaining his degree in education from Benedict College, he began teaching elementary school at East Aiken Elementary School. He spent the next 20 years teaching in Aiken and ended his career as special education teacher at Schofield.
During this time in his life he also devoted time to his second love after family - golf. He developed his game and loved to travel to new courses meeting and making new friends. No tee time was to early no course to rough. He enjoyed the fellowship and camaraderie of his Master City Golf Association friends and the travel they did together. Sharing the game with young people especially his granddaughter, Odessa gave him great joy. When he retired, he spent his days with his wife Jean and on the "greens" across the country. He also continued to work with his military colleagues at American Legion Post 212 and served as post Commander.
In the last years of his life his loves, family and golf, were out of reach due to the progression of his Alzheimer's disease. But the mention of the names of loved ones or a glance at the golf channel always brought a twinkle to his eye. Andrew was a loving husband, father, brother uncle and friend.
Those who were privileged to walk with him in his journey and now morn his passing are his loving wife, Johnnie Mae Hendrix; his daughters Angela Hendrix Terry (Marvin) and Pamela Hendrix Simmons (Anthony) of Atlanta, Ga; his sister Minnie Prude of Irmo, SC; his sister-in-law Margaret Hendrix, Columbia, SC; his granddaughter, Odessa Terry of Atlanta, Ga; his brother George Williams of Aiken, SC; loving nieces and nephews; and a host of friends and golf buddies. He made our lives joyful and now joins his mom, dad and little brother Eddie.
Funeral services will be held 12 PM Friday, January 6, 2017 at Friendship Baptist Church(Viewing 11-12 PM), 515 Richland Ave E, Aiken, SC 29801...Burial will follow in Aiken Memorial Gardens.

Thank you for your strength. Remember when you had to meet Alexis on her way from college to visit Mom and Dad. She ran out of gas and you had to rescue her. With love your niece. Vanessa
