Albin Beyer Obituary

Albin Beyer
JACKSONVILL, FL - Albin Leonard Beyer died on Saturday, Jun 24, 2023 in Jacksonville, FL. Born in Forest Hills Gardens, NY on June 19, 1947, he was the son of Harriet and Harold G. Beyer. From his first breath to his last, Al Beyer was an artist. It wasn't a profession or a calling so much as a state of being. He never competed with other living artists - he paced himself against the great masters and competed only with himself. Beyer's me;tier was photo realism in oils, following the technique of his great muse, Dutch master Johannes Vermeer. However, Beyer had a voracious appetite for learning, and his appetite for knowledge expanded his talent into the realms of water color, photography, and computer arts. His mediums were as much a scientist's tools for the exploration of light and color. His range knew no bounds, and he could never be pigeonholed. Al Beyer has won numerous awards for his art works, and many of his pieces are displayed in permanent collections around the U.S. Al's teaching career began with primary school students in Alabama shortly after graduating from Columbia University in 1968 and transitioned to university fine arts after earning his MFA from the University of Arizona in 1980. Beyer taught at USCA (University of South Carolina - Aiken) for nearly 40 years, teaching figure drawing, watercolor, oil painting, and computer arts. He retired as a Distinguished Professor of Art Emeritus. He is survived by a brother, Nelson Beyer (married Mary Beyer), a sister-in-law, Margaret Beyer (married to Harold Beyer, deceased) and three daughters he shared with ex-wife Judith Harris: Ismene Cox (married Dewayne Cox), Caina Peck (married Tyler Peck), and Linnea George (married Samuel George), as well as his beloved dog, Sanford. Al has many dear nieces, nephews, and of course, adored grandchildren, including: Alec Beyer, Delia Peck, Dylan Hood, Aiden Hood-Cox, Danielle Cox, Greg Cox, and Harrison George. Beyond art and teaching, he loved guerrilla gardening, British Mysteries, getting a coffee and a croissant (especially from New Moon Cafe), listening to new music at Barnes and Noble, cruising for cheap thrills, and being in nature. He was brilliant, inspiring, talented, witty, facetious, and more...and he will be missed beyond measure. Per Al's wishes, there will be no funeral. His family is curating a show of his works to celebrate his memory. In lieu of flowers, please give a noogie to someone you love. In lieu of someone you love, someone you tolerate will do. Al would have also wanted you to donate to Doctors Without Borders and the Shriners. Jacksonville, FL ? Albin "Al" Beyer

We competed on an asphalt basketball court in Athens, Alabama , usually when the rest of Athens was asleep.
Al was to short, to slow and had a impediment from what I assumed was from birth. But he was determined so some of our one on ones became quite competitive!
I would go to his upstairs apartment and view his photos and later his paintings of the kids at his practice teaching group.
I only was around Al for a year or maybe two but he was not only a friend but an influence and inspiration in my life.

Sending condolences to the family - we were honored to know Al as a friend and colleague for many years. Al and Carol used to chat in the gym and share memories of Forest Hills, NY, where we both grew up. We are so pleased that we have a piece of his work in our home, purchased at one of the sales where Al donated the proceeds to Doctors Without Borders. He was such a good man.

The past few years I´ve been wondering what the word was for `great love of a great teacher´, for that´s how I feel about Al. I was late in coming to him, but did get in his last 2 years of teaching, and have him to thank for giving me an opening into my very soul and mind and being through painting, and will be grateful to him all my days. Having not a good memory, I took copious notes when he talked to us: "Parts of a painting should SCREAM!.....Blast it out!....be a wild goose!.....Strong Bold brush strokes...pure color....A Festival of color...big blotches of color....bright and bold and strong...no regard to `things´...Blow out the color!....a portrait of energy...a festivals of warms and cools....
How he worked in the senior painters with the college students, his critiques and art history sessions, his constant inspirations and irritations....2 years with him were a highlight of my life. Your life was....still is, a blessing dear Al.

He was a fantastic human with a kind soul and legendary quick wits. I feel lucky to have been able to meet him so many years ago. He had a huge impact on so many people and they will continue to carry and share the lessons they learned from Al and their memories of him for years to come.

It was a privilege to share the Etherredge Center with Al. He was an amazing artist and passionate colleague who always kept students at the heart of university. The artistic and educational world lost a great person.

A dear friend, one of great humanity, gentle and kind, and a tremendous teacher, has dropped into history. Many well-deserved words of admiration and gratitude will be spoken and written about Al. I wish he could know that. I will miss him.

Prayers for peace and comfort. As someone has said, death may end a life but it doesn´t end a relationship and you´ll keep Al alive forever by sharing your good memories of him with those you meet in this life.
