Albert Henry Peters, Jr.
AIKEN, SC - Albert Henry Peters, Jr., 87, of Aiken, S.C., loving husband of twenty-four years to Milly Peters and son of the late Albert H. Peters Sr. and the late Magie Finucan Peters of Summerville, SC, entered into eternal rest at his residence, Saturday morning, June 18, 2016.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by his son Albert H. 'Pete' (Karen) Peters III of Aiken, S.C; stepsons, Glenn (Kim) Dufour of Columbia, S.C., Steve (Pat) Dufour, and Ray (Mary) Dufour both of Aiken, S.C; granddaughter Carsten H. Peters, grandsons Albert H. Peters IV, and Weston H. Peters, all of Aiken, S.C. and his sister, Beverly (Jerry) Moore of Miami, Fla.
His first wife of forty-three years, Joyce Harmon Peters, and his sister Magie P. Waring preceded him in death.
He was born in Summerville, S.C. and was a resident of Aiken since 1952.
Mr. Peters graduated with the Corps of Cadets, Clemson Agricultural College, in 1950. He was one of Clemson's oldest surviving Cadet Colonels of the Corps. He was a member of the national military societies Scabbard and Blade and the Arnold Society of Air Cadets.
He was a member of The Pershing Rifles, The Clemson Society of Chemical Engineers, Alpha Chi Sigma, The Senior Platoon, the Block C Club, and was Co-Captain of the rifle team. He was selected to be a member of Blue Key, and Who's Who Among Students in American Universities and Colleges.
Mr. Peters was a loyal alumnus, serving on the Clemson University Board of Visitors and also the Clemson Alumni National Council.
After a brief period in the oil industry, he entered the service during the Korean War and served as a Captain in the United States Air Force. Peters left the service to begin a thirty-eight year career with DuPont at the Savannah River Site during the Cold War. He had an exciting, thirty-eight year Dupont career being involved in the development of Californium-252 and also the world's first computer controlled nuclear reactor.
He served as the Manager of the Savannah River Laboratory, then Manager of Operations (reactors), and then Manager of Plant Facilities and Services. Peters, heading the 1989 transition team between DuPont and Westinghouse, had the distinction of being the last DuPont employee and manager of the Savannah River Site. He spent several years in editing and managing the publication of History of DuPont at the Savannah River Plant.
Mr. Peters began a new career as CEO, President, and Chairman of the Board of Palmetto Federal Savings and Loan. He brought Palfed into federal banking compliance and expanded the bank before leading its merger into Regions Bank.
He was also President and Chairman of Finucan Peters Development Company.
Al Peters loved Aiken and served as President of the Rotary Club, President of the Aiken Businessmen's Club, and as a Director of the Aiken Chamber of Commerce. He loved to dance and was a member of Aiken's Quadrille Club, Cotillion Club, and Les Amis Club. An avid lifetime golfer, Peters had been a member of Midland Valley, Palmetto, Houndslake, and Woodside Country Clubs. In his late seventies, he finally hit his first hole in one and twice shot his age.
Peters was a lifelong Presbyterian and member of First Presbyterian Church of Aiken since 1952.
The Internment will be held with military honors at 1:15 PM, Tuesday, June 21, 2016 at Historic Bethany Cemetery. The service will follow at 2:00 PM at First Presbyterian Church in Aiken with Rev. Dr. Brian Coulter officiating. Honorary Pallbearers will be members of the Aiken Businessmen's Club, and the Sorta Eighties Golf Group.
The family will receive friends at the Presbyterian fellowship hall following the service.
